We had the good fortune of connecting with Paige Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paige, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
One of my all time favorite quotes goes “Bloom wherever you are planted.” It meant so much too me that I had it tattooed as a constant reminder. I think for me, growing where I did and having the type of upbringing I had, it was always a struggle to choose the road less travelled. Growing up I did not have it all but compared to some of my peers and kids down the way, I had a lot. I had a family that supported me and my decisions no matter how much they didn’t really understand at the time. I had a lot of friends who never made it this far, we lost them young, and because of this I have others that decided on the path of vengeance but through the support and backing of my family I was allowed to see a different way despite growing up in the same conditions.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
By nature I am a Street Artist, Illustrator and Graphic Designer. In all the fields I focus on I employ one basic principle and it has guided my work for a long time now, Color Theory. In a line, I use it with understanding how colors can affect a mood or convey emotions and bring life to the inanimate. Being heavily influence by anime and animations in my early days I began art by recreating scenes and characters from my favorite cartoons until it grew and blossomed into my own work today and I am excited to be able to share that with my own audience as of right now. Being a full time artist in today’s society is no easy feat and I would be lying if I said it doesn’t get harder before it gets a bit easier but passion is what drives and sometimes you have to sit back and let faith and confidence in your work steer the ship for a bit while the seas settle.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Right off the bat I would recommend the downtown mural district. Since 2020 I have partnered with the Mayor and local government to restore and bring life back to downtown area through art and entertainment. Since then we have together created entire street clusters completely covered in murals from local and international artists leading to increase foot traffic and events in the once dissonant area. That aside, Kingston Jamaica is the entertainment hub of the country there is nightlife every night this is truly the city that does not sleep you just need to know where to look. The Bob Marley Museum, The National Gallery, Sports bars galore, you just need to turn your head and you can find somewhere to spend some time here.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to Matthew McCarthy. A major influence in Jamaica’s new wave and a pioneer of street art in the country. He found me in my 2nd year of art school and acted as a mentor and friend since, a lot of how I work and operate is because of his guidance back then I can never say thank you enough.
