We had the good fortune of connecting with Porshia J. Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Porshia, do you have a budget? How do you make lifestyle and spending decisions?
Absolutely. I don’t think I would be where I am today without one. I’m currently debt free as of two months ago and I couldn’t be prouder. I knew I wanted to get further in life and educate myself more on money so I took a finance class. It taught me that having a budget gives you freedom and control in a world that lacks discipline. I took the class multiple times and sooner than later I paid off my car 2 years early. My business started getting bigger clients, with larger budgets and I felt so equipped not only with money, but just my overall confidence. My husband and I were able to cash flow our wedding, with no debt. My budget has now become my lifestyle and is attached to some of the biggest moments in my life. This year we paid off my final student loan, something I never knew was possible. One of the lessons from the course was ” Live like no one else, so you can live like no one else.” That’s exactly what we did. I’m first generation American, I come from a family of Haitian and Bahamian immigrants, so I’ve seen how my parents lived like no one else to provide a better life for me. It just takes hardwork and understanding your goals. Your relationship with money shows everything. It lays out how patient, consistent and disciplined you can be. Knowing that you can say “no” not because you don’t have it but because you have goals is HUGE. I can’t stress enough, if you speak to me for 5 minutes you’ll hear about my faith, Beyonce and my budget!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Hey my name is Porshia J, I’m a vocalist and performer here in South Florida. I sing with my top 40 corporate band by the name of ” PJ&CO Band”. I’m the Creative Director/CoOwner of Innergy Dance Company also located in South Florida. I lead worship at Church By the Glades and I’m the acting Vocal Director of Rally Young Adult ministry. During the weekdays I also teach vocal lessons, which I’ve been doing for 5 years. . I’ve had so many great moments, I’ve been featured in “Bad Boys 4 life” movie and most recently performed with Jamie Fox for the Hardrock 50th Superbowl Celebration. Throughout my career I’ve learned to just be myself. I grew up with a terrible stutter, took every speech class to overcome it. I thought I could hide it, pretend it didn’t exist. But it does. Being a singer who grew up stuttering is who I am. I used to try to be perfect because I felt like the moment someone heard me stutter they wouldn’t take me seriously. Did that happen, sure, sometimes. But my flaw didn’t have to be the end of my story, it was only the beginning. I’ve learned to accept who I am, flaws and all. Not question who I am. However I match that with hard work, consistency and passion. No tricks, no short cuts. Some opportunities I worked for, others were right place, right time, and I just so happen to be ready for the opportunity. My brand is about authenticity, flourishing in who you are because that’s what makes us special. We can be and do whatever you want regardless of where you come from, flaws and all.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Were getting Haitian food every day at this spot in sunrise “JJ Gourmet” or “Albertes” in FTL. For sure hitting the beach and probably hit Wynwood in Miami for a artsy vibe. I would probably invite you to church for the weekend because we go crazy! Seriously though, its not your average service. For the most part I’m a homebody so Netflix and chill, and I would probably cook some of my famous chocolate chip cookies!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh man, life is all about who has your back, who’s willing to pour into you, mentor you. My husband is of course number one, were building a legacy together and breaking chains we never thought we could. I’m so blessed to have him in my corner. My family is such a huge impact in my life. My mom is the reason I work so hard and my dad is the reason for my perspective in life. My aunt and my cousins really remind me of who I am, where I come from and to always be proud of that. My friends have been with me for so long, every journey has been shared with them. They’ve sat on phone for all my ideas and worries, encouraging me, pushing me. I truly am grateful. My church, God really put some warriors in my corner. Finding a church changed my life, and the people I get to do life with, I wouldn’t change it for the world. I truly have an amazing support system. In life find people who challenge you, encourage you, empower you, and push you to becoming to greatest version of yourself. I have that. Most importantly, all glory to God. Having faith and sticking to what you value is paramount for me. Its guided my decisions and journey. I have so much more to do in my life and I know no matter what I have a team that has my back.
