We had the good fortune of connecting with Rae Jenae and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rae, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I take risk in my everyday life for about as long as I can remember, from moving to Miami from New York with no job or family, to creating my own business providing for a community that primarily doesn’t receive as much support. Everyday I take a risk on me and the things I believe in. I truly believe that the lesbian community specifically needs more safe spaces and bars/clubs that we can call our own. Every month when I coordinate an event however I feel I’m taking a HUGE risk. Im trusting the community to 1. come together and 2. spend money! As a coordinator there are guarantees that need to be met in order to secure spaces for these parties and its a BET I have to make on ME! to make it happen. Most times I feel its a gamble, give to get and sometimes you lose more than you make, BUT ITS ALWAYS A GAIN! because somewhere along the line I’ve changed someones life doing this and if no one else it for sure has changed mine!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lezchic’ began as a means to provide information for lesbians residing in or traveling to Miami. Shortly after it became an event company in itself and I couldn’t be more grateful for that! Its completely changed my life and has become the very best part of me! I feel like what sets Lezchic’ apart from other organizations is how personal it is. Its ME! I am lezchic’ and you know what you’re getting every time. Im loud, blunt, raw, funny, relatable, driven, focused! Each event is inclusive and REAL! its about showcasing new talent based on talent and not the number of followers or hype you have. Its about providing a service all year long and for many more to come and not just here and there when its profitable for me. Its about the struggle for me to do something WE NEED! and it isn’t easy. The lesbian community can be pretty divided and they don’t spend as much as bars/clubs want them to, so I created a space where I make the prices, I set the rules, and I do my best to make it enjoyable and affordable for everyone! Ive learned that you cant please everyone unfortunately, but, I do the best I can anyway! I’d love the world to know that Lezchic’ is a platform for lesbians but OPEN to everyone! we are adamant on providing amazing inclusive events, that allow us to be ourselves! and experience things that most organizations don’t offer, for example our Lesbian Cabaret before covid was AMAZING! I absolutely cannot wait to be back in FULL effect!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Miami has some pretty awesome hot spots, Id start with brunch at my favorite Italian restaurant in South Beach called Via Emilia 9, lunch at Naked Taco also South Beach and Dinner Ra Sushi in Pembroke Pines.

For drinks and a good time I would visit Wynwood, between the deck, 1800 lucky, The Pizza and Beer garden formally known as wood tavern, and gramps.

Theres always activations, events, things going on in Wynwood, art installations etc. Its my favorite thing to do besides jet skiing and boating.

There are other LGBT organizations that host periodic events that are always a good time as well such as amavi, shelife, pandora, and of course then you have one of my favorite people, Miss Octavia Yearwood who has been a great friend and mentor to me in this process. She’s just an all around amazing energy to sponge in.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout anyone who’s ever been to a Lezchic’ party, anyone who’s ever reposted our flyers, or helped us set up, or gave us an opportunity. THIS ONES FOR YOU! Thank you for being the best part of Lezchic’ seriously it wouldn’t be possible without each and every one of you! The support that I have received since I started Lezchic’ has been phenomenal, so many people offer their time, their resources, their money to help me make moves in this community. The opportunities we’ve been presented I am just beyond thankful for because it helps us in being seen and heard! I want to thank the Shoutout series for including us in their segment! Thank you for recognizing our hard work and dedication!
