We had the good fortune of connecting with Romi Myers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Romi, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I feel that taking calculated risks in both life + career alike, has been instilled upon me from the minute my family made the decision to move to the US from Brazil almost four decades ago. It taught me a great deal of what it meant to make sacrifices on one end, in order to yield better long term results on the other. So naturally as an adult, had I not chosen a path of consistently taking risks in both life + career, I would not be where I am today. This is how we all learn what it is to be human, and how to make the best of what has been presented before us. There are never right or wrong answers in life. Only consequences associated with those risks that can lead a person down a path of success, stagnation, or hardship. The importance lies behind learning the skill of trusting one’s intuition when presented with an opportunity or a challenge.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Both my body of work + self-confidence have grown leaps and bounds over the past 2 years. Not giving up + showing up everyday has been instrumental. I feel incredibly grateful + proud of how much I’ve accomplished since arriving to Miami. When I first began exploring my style, I was so shy + scared to show others that not even my husband knew I had so many concepts sketched out until I mentioned I was ready for a change. I was concerned my body of work looked too different, nothing like anything I saw. But then it dawned on me that was a good thing after speaking with more seasoned art professionals. The augmented reality component which happened by accident has also caught the attention of many which has been very exciting to experience. It has inspired me to continue exploring more innovative ways to engage with my audience.

As many can relate, my self reflection + soul searching began at the start of the pandemic. I was still in Seattle, missing my family in Miami, and was also very burned out from my corporate job. Call it a blessing in disguise, it took me getting laid off from my cushy Creative Director position to propel me outside my comfort zone once again. Perhaps, a mild mid-life crisis of sorts, I knew I was ready to go off on my own and follow my passion – to become a professional artist. Being serious about my decision, I enrolled on a 16 week small business program while building my art portfolio + website at the same time. I also began to apply to artists calls with the deliberate intention of getting rejected. Until the day I was accepted into my first art show with Superfine Miami in March 2022. And then my second art show with Spectrum Miami during ArtBasel week in December 2022, so on, so forth. It feels good saying that my perseverance is slowly paying off + paving a path I once only dreamed of.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite spots I would (and do) take my friends to (in no particular order):

Breakfast at Buena Vista Deli
Wynwood Walls
Venetian Pool
Coffee break at Panther Coffee (Wynwood location)
Happy Hour at Doya
PAMM
Lunch at Versaille
Ice Cream at Azucar (Little Havana location)
Dinner at Smoke and Dough
If vegan, Dinner at Planta (Cocowalk location)
Bill Baggs State Park
Dinner at Mandolin

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest shoutout would be to all of those who have not only received me with open arms + loved me unconditionally for being who I am, but just as important, to all those who have doubted me or placed me in a bad light because of their own personal insecurities in the past. Sounds a bit odd to thank those who have discouraged me or put me down throughout my life + career, but it was truly the flame I needed to believe in myself + keep marching forward. It would be unfair to point out specific individuals because there are simply too many out there who have helped me + continue to help me grow throughout my journey.
