Meet Ryan Malkin | Principal Attorney and Founder of Malkin Law, P.A.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Malkin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My passion for the beer, wine, and spirits industry began when I started writing about the alcohol and hospitality industries, with articles appearing in such publications as SmartMoney, Beverage Media, SevenFiftyDaily, NY Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Esquire.
This experience as a journalist exposed nuances of the industry I wanted to transform, which led me to work at Pernod Ricard USA and ultimately to create Malkin Law eleven years ago.
I wanted to have my own practice to serve a wide range of clients, from recognized brands to craft distilleries, and help them navigate the intricacies of federal and state-by-state alcohol beverage laws.
Our clients range from start-ups to the biggest brands in the world, and we love supporting companies of all sizes to achieve their goals.
Our track record includes assisting innovative ventures like Air Co in bringing the world’s first vodka made from captured CO2 to market. We also work with several celebrity and influencer brands, which have been growing in popularity over the past few years. We are also proud to continue to support and act as counsel for the American Craft Spirits Association for the past decade.
We always want to be ahead of the curve. We’ve been representing clients in the cannabis/hemp/CBD space for years and also representing clients in the booming non-alcoholic beverage market. We are proud to be on the cutting edge and proud to represent of the Adult Non-Alcoholic Beverage Association.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit – I’ve started businesses since a young age and have never been scared to jump into things on my own. From a magic show business when I was around nine, a sports cards trading business in my early teens to a ten-plus man landscaping crew business in college, I’ve always been driven to start my own businesses.
I’m lucky to have found an industry that I genuinely love and feel passionate about. When I started Malkin Law, I was driven (and I still am) by trying to find new and better ways to do things. I am more than happy to challenge the status quo and consider practical business implications when making decisions.
For instance, after regularly providing state-by-state cheat sheets for clients, I started Set The Bar, a first-of-its-kind app that gives both wine and spirits industry members access to trade practice regulations in all 50 states 24/7 from their phones.
The alcohol beverage industry is the most complex and regulated of any sector. It’s always been a challenge to keep up with the latest regulations to provide the best counsel to our clients. But once you learn the nuances, you can try to do things differently and be innovative within the confined of the law.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Miami is a city that always has something going on and something for everyone. Here are some of my favorite spots:
One of my favorite restaurants in Miami is Cote – a Korean steakhouse in the Design District.
For a true Miami experience, I would recommend getting dinner at Cafe La Trova, in Little Havana, which has great live Cuban music.
If you’re looking to explore other areas in Miami or plan a full-day trip, I would drive up to the Boca Beach Club and spend the night there.
I also really enjoy a bike ride from Surfside to South Beach and grabbing take out from Joe’s Stone Crab and sitting in the park or sitting outside by the water at Smith & Wollensky.
For the early birds or brunch enthusiasts, the breakfast buffet at Corsair in the Turnberry Hotel in Aventura is a great option that will keep you stuffed all day. Or visit Bagel Bar East in North Miami before hitting the beach in Surfside or Bal Harbour.
I also like the ceviche and smoked fish dip at Catch Fish Market.
For a night out, if you’re looking for something different, if the Nu Deco Ensemble is performing, they always provide an amazing show.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father has been a constant source of inspiration in my entrepreneurial journey. Growing up, I saw him work almost every day of the week, including weekends, as a small business owner. Weekends weren’t just for leisure, they were an opportunity for me to learn the ropes of running a business firsthand. From stocking shelves to pricing items and managing inventory, those early experiences instilled in me a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility.
Equally deserving of recognition is my mother, who is also a small business owner. Witnessing her build a successful business while concurrently managing the demands of parenthood has been nothing short of astounding and a tremendous source of inspiration for me.
In addition to my parents, I am grateful for the support and guidance of mentors, colleagues, and the experiences that have shaped my path.
