We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandy Cesar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sandy, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
The most difficult decision I had to make came to me at the age of seventeen when I became pregnant with my daughter. Although she is the most beautiful part of my life, at the age of seventeen I found myself struggling with the decision that would change my life. I worried about what my parents, friends and my church would say or think of me, I worried about whether I would be able to continue school or would I have to drop out and go straight to work. All in all, I was afraid of the unknown, but I chose to keep my daughter and I worked through the obstacles that came my way with the great help of family and friends. My most difficult decision became my best decision.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My passion for photography started at the age of twelve and I haven’t been able to put the camera down since then. What I believe sets me apart from other photographers is my purpose when it comes to photography, my persistence as I overcome challenges on my journey, and my originality as I love to use props and test new ideas on set to create images that people have never seen before or are afraid to put to the test. These are a few qualities that set me apart from other photographers. I got to where I am today professionally through persistence. Many obstacles came along the way, and I took breaks, but I never gave up. My journey along the way wasn’t easy, but I believe that’s what weeds out those who are meant to be photographers and those who aren’t. I overcame challenges by seeking out help from family and friends, challenging myself in the process to be better, and overall learning from my experiences. I want the world to know that my love for photography didn’t come overnight, it has been multiple years in the making, and I continuously work at my craft in order to grow and be better.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the places I love to attend and that means a lot to me. For this week-long trip, I would take them to Miami Beach, which is a tourist attraction and therefore should be visited, plus they have a lot of great restaurants that should be tried. My two favorite restaurants that I would absolutely have to take my friend to would be Chwa which is my favorite Haitian restaurant and Pearl Caribbean. I love visiting South point park, therefore, I would have to take my friend there. The scenery there is beautiful, and the water there is so clear and reminds me of the Caribbean. A few other places I would take my friend to would be water rapids which is a water park, bike riding, Aventura Mall, and Church.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout and give credit to my husband, daughter, and friends. I had taken a break from photography for three years, around this time my friends made certain that I did not give up on photography completely. They would book me for photoshoots even though I told them I wasn’t interested or didn’t have the time, they would even have their family and friends book with me. My friends made certain that I did not give up on photography, they helped me get back to my purpose, and get back to doing what I love. My husband and my daughter are my teams, they help keep business going and keep my stress level down. My husband helps me with editing the pictures and often assists me during the photoshoots with the heavy equipment, setting up, etc. My daughter is the behind-the-scenes specialist, the video clips I post on Instagram are all thanks to her. Adding family to the business helped me with my success as they are my team and they help relieve most of the stress that used to burden me and the brand.
