We had the good fortune of connecting with Sequoia South and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sequoia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When we realized we wanted to be a band, the first thing the three of us did was schedule a business meeting. This gave us the opportunity to sit down and share our vision and goals for the band, and to make sure we were really all on the same page moving forward. Most importantly, we established our mission statement at that meeting: To spread joy and foster community by connecting authentically through music, live shows and online content creation one person at a time. About 8 months in, we decided we were ready to form an LLC. We realized that as we started taking bigger and bigger shows, and really digging into our branding and merch, we needed to make sure our finances were all in line. Starting our business was the right move when we realized it would further facilitate our mission statement.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a band, what we are most proud of is our harmonies. All three of us (Lockwood Barr, Bryan Lane, and Leigh Cara) are completely different artists and vocalists: Lockwood with her smoky rocker voice and Scruggs banjo picking, Leigh with her powerhouse multi-octave range and rhythmic guitar playing, and Bryan with his buttery smooth vocals and killer piano chops. Our ability to blend vocally is where our magic lies. It ties us together and sets us apart.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely The Local! It’s got the best burgers and chicken tenders in Nashville, and there is amazing live music there every single night. From writer’s rounds to full band shows, you always know you can swing by for a few minutes and hear something amazing AND run into some friends.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are several! Our producer, Pat Holt: He saw us at a festival on a few months into us being a band, and decided to take us under his wing and help us make our first record
Our Business Leader, Ken Little: He helped Pat get the record going
Carolyn Dawn Johnson: She coached os on vocals and performance to get us ready for studio time
Tre Corley: He saw as at the same festival where we met Pat, and he landed us our first gig on national television on The Huckabee Show
Kyle Everson: Leigh’s husband, and co-producer with Pat.
