We had the good fortune of connecting with Susana Vergara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susana, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk is necessary, if we don’t take risks we will never know what comes next. I think that as an immigrant taking risks can be scary but also satisfying and even more so when you realize that if you hadn’t done it you wouldn’t be where you are now, for example in my case. I have opportunities to work in incredible tattoo shops.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a graphic designer but I focus more on the world of tattoos, but I believe that these two professions go hand in hand. I do not believe that it is possible to do a tattoo without knowledge of color, composition and experience in drawing. I spend a lot more time dedicated to tattooing but I never put design aside, that is why every time I see places where I can explore and take new risks with respect to my career, I do it, and that is how I have managed to paint a couple of murals for the city of Hollywood and one in Fortlauderdale.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First of all I would take him to Hollywood Beach, I think it is a beautiful and quiet place, I would take him to eat at a Greek place that I love where you can see the ocean, the place is called Taverna Opa, after that we would have a beer at a bar that I recommend a lot to bars in N.Y.C called Octopus. We would visit the Perez museum for a whole afternoon and then we would take a walk through Winwood. For the last day we would go to Foetlauderdale to a place that has been there for more than 15 years called Riverside market, a place in the middle of a neighborhood that surprises you because you would never imagine it is there, you feel like you are in your living room at home, you can find a selection of more than 150 beers and eat a delicious pozza, I love its decoration.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I think my father has been a fundamental part of my development as a person and as the professional that I am today. In addition to teaching me many things through art, I have had the good fortune to work with him on projects such as murals, etc.
