We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Shearer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydney, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since I was a little girl I was obsessed with colors and art. I remember going through school they would always ask the question, ”What do you want to be when you grow up?” and remember replying with an Artist the majority of the time. Art was my get away. My peace. Art let my mind soar because there are no rules in it. And as I got older started wearing makeup, watching videos on YouTube, practicing on myself I quickly came to realize it was just like painting and I fell absolutely in love. The more I practiced, the better I got and decided that Makeup was what I was meant to do. And what’s better than making a career of something you love?
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I first started doing makeup in 2017 and starting out wasn’t easy. Building a clientele takes time and makeup cost money, so I worked 2 jobs to be able to pay for what I needed to get started and still be able to take care of myself. I did makeup for free for an entire year so I could improve my skills and try to build a clientele. In 2018 I decided to get my license. When I was in school I made a point to learn everything I could about skin; the types, the textures, the tones, the undertones, everything. I made it a goal to be able to achieve to utmost flawless look on everyone from lightest skin to the darkest skin, on not just clear skin but skin with acne and rosacea and not just youthful skin but mature skin as well. It took a lot studying, practice and trial and error but I can confidently say I achieved my goal and I think the part that sets me apart from other artists is not just the diversity but the creativity; to not be afraid of using vivid colors and different shapes but also be able to create some soft and elegant. Through our my time in this industry I learned that not everyone is going to like you or your work, not everyone is going believe in you or support you and that’s okay the few that do are the few that matter and as long as you believe in yourself you can make anything happen. And that’s really what my brand’s all about; believing in yourself, loving yourself, being confident in who are and knowing that you’re beautiful in every form whether you decide to be outrageously colorful, sultry and glamorous or soft and sweet.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some places and things I like to do in my city would first to be visit my favorite local coffee shop, The Moxie. For lunch, some of my favorite places to go are The Vintage, Los Jefes Grill, Nice Guys Nola & the Bijou. All very different from the other but so tasty! Some things I like to do would be visiting different art galleries, going to some of our local museums and attending hair & makeup shows that are being hosted in the area. Roller Skating through city park and visiting the botanical garden are also very high on list. Living near New Orleans, born and raised is truly an experience because no matter where you go, what you like to do it’s always a good vibe and you’re sure to have a good time!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to start off by thanking my mom and grandmother. They’ve believed in me and supported me nonstop through every step of starting and owning my own business. I would like to thank my loving partner for always pushing me to excel in my craft and not allowing me to get comfortable. I would also like to thank my two friends and business partners for allowing me to be myself and not put a limit on my creativity but rather help it flourish. Finally I would like to thank all of my clients for trusting me with their faces and always showing me love.
