We had the good fortune of connecting with Tammy Troutman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tammy, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
When I was a little girl I was always enamored with being in the beauty salon, the way it smelled, the women who were being serviced, the service providers and the feeling that people felt after there hair or nails were done was something that resonated with me early on. I loved how the hairstylist and manicurist created pure art in there own ways. I’ve always been drawn to some sort of art and creative expression and after working different odd jobs I remember telling my mother I need a career where I wouldn’t get bored. While sitting at my friend’s nail shop in 2011 it came to me. From that day I began to pursue my passion.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel that what sets brand and myself apart from others is my discipline and integrity. Through my career I have had a lot different struggles like what services to offer, I am in the right location, are customers happy with the service, will they return and all of those little things that can be a nag in the back of your mind. No matter what the circumstance I choose to be authentic to each and every customer and potential customer, for example in my industry as a manicurist there are so many different products and services on the market and most people are looking for the newest and trendiest service and that can be pretty costly. I used to feel like you need to keep up and compete with the bigger salons near me and be able to service everyone that comes through the door, but after taking different workshops and trainings with Industry professionals who have been around for years, I learned that it’s OK to say no and to find your niche and work on that and grow it. My personal discipline has really played a very important factor and me growing as an entrepreneur and as a manicurist. I start my day at 4 AM, That consist of my spiritual practices and working out. It gets me ready for the day ahead to service clients and to be focused on them and only them when we are together. What I am most excited about is expansion right now I am very small a one woman show but I’m excited to help other new nail techs that are fresh out of school gain the experience and the confidence that they need to go out and conquer this industry. I’m excited about adding new services to my menu in the future and really taking it into a direction of more of a spa versus just doing nails which is what I’m most passionate about and there is always a sense of purpose and accomplishment after a customer leaves my chair. I look forward to being a vessel to those around me, like my industry co workers, clients and young Entrepreneurs.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a little tricky because it’s depends on the friend if I have a artsy, friend I would more than likely being spending most of the week in wynwood and midtown Miami. Wynwood walls is always one of my favorite spots the art on the walls Changes from time to time so it’s always something new to see, & the food they serve there is good as well. There is so much life all around South Florida. Circle house coffee in Flagler Village in Fort Lauderdale, is such a jewel. Great coffee drinks and snacks, the Philip and Patricia Frost Museum, Vizcaya Guardens & museum, Of course no visit would be complete without going to the beach and to me it doesn’t matter which beach it is just got to take a trip to the beach. I practice yoga once a week and my yoga instructor Loni Duek, who I absolutely love and adore I always try to bring anyone that I can with me to just experience her awesomeness.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who inspired me to get to this place that I am right now. My parents who never forced anything on me and allowed me to find my own path, while they may not have always understood it, they supported me and always stood beside me. All of the salon owners, customers who let me service them in the beginning of my career and all of my current clients who constantly inspire me to keep growing. Also I have to thank my Significant other (Michael) who listens to every idea and rant after a long day.
