We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Pottinger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
During the pandemic, I was forced to sit with myself, with my thoughts and reflect on my life. I often think back to countless days during my childhood at my grandmother’s house in Jamaica. I witnessed my grandmother owning several businesses, most of which were handmade items from cakes, ceramics, to flower arrangements. I always admired her grit, determination and realized that I grew up with the blueprint for success. My passion for all natural products became my focal point for my business. I am constantly inspired by nature, and the countless benefits it has to offer.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The best part about making soap using the cold process method, is it gives me total control of the ingredients. I get to customize each bar of soap that I make. I get to learn so much about all the benefits of natural ingredients, and blending essential oils to make the perfect scent for the soaps. However, not all batches of soap are created equal. There were many bumps in the road, bad batches, sometimes to the point where I am not able to salvage the soap and would have to throw it away. That is the biggest pain point, when the soap misbehaves. But because of these bad batches, I learned about how different ingredients react differently, and can make adjustments. I enjoy speaking with my customers, and educating them on the benefits they can achieve with using my all natural soaps. This contributed to my success because my customers know my products are made with intention and most of all with love.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
What’s Miami without the beach?! That would be the first stop – South Beach, to soak in the sun and beautiful ocean. Miami is such a culturally diverse city, the food is just as diverse. Another popular destination is Wynwood, where bars and restaurants come alive at night. Sometimes the city can be a little too busy, so there’s always the Everglades where you can take an air boat ride, or go to the Alligator Farm.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband Cristo Calas deserves all the recognition for his love and encouragement, even on the days I stop believing in myself. He was such a team player when I told him we were going on a date to a soapmaking class to make soap for the first time, not our typical date night!
