We had the good fortune of connecting with TJ Spearman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi TJ, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?

I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.

These two lines are the last two lines of a poem by William Ernest Henley named Invictus. From the first time I had the chance to read it in High School it spoke to me. Just always remembering that if it’s something that you want to do, then find a way to do it. Be the leader of your body, your soul and guide yourself into what you want.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well my work I find is more unorthodox then most. Really excited for my son to see my grind and see the effort I put in. This is something that I see him taking over one day. Just didn’t give up no matter how cliche it sound. Yes at moments I felt like I did so there were times when I didn’t put any time into my craft. So was it easy hell no, but I think of my grandmother and everything she had to overcome. I can hear her in my ear say “you can do it, yes, yes you can”. Biggest lesson is to never give up, no matter what. Even if it may feel like you not getting the results you want, have to keep pushing forward. My brand is T.King Designs and not many people know the story behind the name. The T represents the males in my family as all until recently names began with the letter. King comes from us as descendents of Kings if you know your history.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being that I’m always running thru the tri-county I’ll really show them how South Florida is. First stop WPB is a few medical dispensaries. Ride on jet-skis in Riviera Beach, then catch a bite at voo-doo bayou. In Broward we at the beach cause I love the water. Gotta stop by Bru’s Room and Mapleberry Tea Room won’t be sorry. Then one of my favorite places the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Once we in Miami then it’s poppin. List of eats first, Cubo on 54th and 32nd ave, Subs on the run, Snappers, Crabman 305, Sunday’s, Niecey’s Sweet Tooth factory. I can go on and on but you get the drift. Gotta go thru wynwood catch a vibe and if you not from Miami you’ll end up on South Beach.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One Love! First I want to thank my wife Che aka The Pitbull. From the first time we meet she has always been by my side and supported my dream. No matter if its being a model to an assistant she has been a rock throughout this growing process. My Family from my brother, aunts, uncles, nephews, niece, cousins I deeply appreciate all the support. My friends who believed in me to pay for my services and give me the additional confidence I needed to keep going. Alpha Phi Omega in particular the Kappa Delta Chapter, love y’all. All of Rattler Nation FAMU Forever!
