We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony Chirinos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tony, what’s your definition for success?
First, I don’t let society define what success is for me. I make my own definition of success which is as follows. Continue to exhibit my work, produce and share new work that push the boundaries of my artistic vision, seeing my students succeed and progress in their careers, continuously learning and experimenting with new techniques and ideas, and make meaningful impact on the art/photo community and foster a vibrant and supportive environment for fellow artists and photographers. That is what success means to me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a narrative crafted through images rather than words. Photography, for me, is a way to tell stories that are deeply personal yet universally resonant. What sets my work apart is my commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic vision, constantly experimenting with new techniques and ideas to evoke emotion and provoke thought.

I’m incredibly proud of the body of work I’ve created over the years, including my photo book ‘The Precipice’ and my limited edition portfolios. Winning the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship has been a significant milestone, validating my dedication to the craft. Additionally, seeing my students succeed and progress in their careers brings me immense joy and fulfillment.

Throughout my career, I’ve learned the importance of staying true to oneself, embracing continuous learning, and fostering a supportive community. The impact I have on my students and the broader art community is just as significant as my personal achievements.

My story is one of passion, perseverance, and the transformative power of art. By sharing my journey, I hope to inspire others to pursue their creative dreams and make their mark on the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, I would invite them over to my place and hang out with my family. We would look at photo books and talk about the photo art world. I would make some cocktails and cook dinner. Opening your most private place to a friend is real and full of love.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, my high school art teacher, Susan Maguire who introduced me to photography in the tenth grade when I realized that I can become a writer by using images rather than words.

Second, my family, mom, dad who allowed me to experiment and experience new things. My kids who have taught me to become the best dad ever and my wife who gave me the meaning of love.

These people give me so much comfort in my life which allows me to express myself clearly as an artist.
