We had the good fortune of connecting with Willy Chin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Willy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
There are so many factors but I think quality is probably the largest factor behind my success. I strive to maintain my brand to a high standard of quality whether that be my music, videos, imagery, events etc. There are times when I experiment with different styles, but in the end what I put out will always maintain that “Willy Chin Standard”. In an ever changing society I am constantly learning new things and incorporating them to continue to produce high quality work. My audience knows that when they see my name or logo they know they are getting the best of me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a DJ/ Entertainer
What sets me apart from others is my creative remixes and production that have a comical vibe’
It has been a long road and the journey is not over. I started working in a music store selling equipment and records, then I started DJ’ing weddings and office parties. After that I started putting out mix tapes and remixes which caught the attention of Black Chiney Sound and then after was soon recruited.
It wasn’t easy, the hardest part was the transition from weddings to international DJ. It took a lot of learning along the way. It was hard because you are reading a different crowd at every event. Learning new music from different regions in the world and incorporating it into the set.
The biggest lesson learned is “you get out what you put in”. If you are trying to reach the next level but you’re watching Netflix all day, there’s a reason why you can’t level up. You gotta make the sacrifices, you gotta choose, all major holidays are big working days, so I am missing that time with my family.
I am most proud and excited about – my online course SoundBoyPro.com I started this project at the beginning of the Pandemic in March 2020 and by the end of the year I launched. Being young/new in the business is hard, its hard to get professional and useful knowledge because nobody wants to share. So I created this course to give other’s in the industry the opportunity to learn the tools that are attributed to mine and other’s successes.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well first of all if they are hungry there is only one place to eat… and that’s my mom’s house! There’s always food cooking and as soon as you enter you’re considered family. After that we would hit up Wynwood, if it’s a Tuesday you’ll see me at Coyo Taco. There’s always something happening in Miami, you could be walking down the street and see an Athlete, Artist or Entertainer.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am where I am because of my surroundings. Thanks to Supa Dups for introducing me to DJ’ing and music production, Paul Chin for teaching me about music, sound system equipment and more. Of Course the whole Black Chiney Sound system, we grew together and shared a lot of knowledge. A big shoutout to Miami, my home base – to the fans, without you I’de be nobody. And you can’t forget about my Moms, “Mummy Chin”, she encouraged me to pursue my passion and allowed me to use her entire house as my studio… and didn’t charge me rent!
