We had the good fortune of connecting with Zania Sala and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zania, what do you attribute your success to?
When you work in voiceover it is truly important to reflect your authentic self in everything you record. Yes, you are an artist, a creative and in order to do that successfully, you have to also reflect who you are through your business. First and foremost you are a business and you must operate like one. You are what you say, post, write, do, communicate and how you carry yourself, everywhere you go, 24/7. The world is now at your fingertips and you better be aware that anything you put out there is a reflection of you. That said, when you open up and let your vulnerability and true self shine, you are inviting people to match your energy and that truly resonates with most. When you allow people in through your truth and authenticity you truly create what every human on this planet, needs, wants and craves, Connection. That’s my job. To connect with humans through my voice and my business. I love this daily challenge.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a voiceover artist. I give life and personality to scripts/copy. My type of work is used in commercials and promos for television and radio, for storytelling in corporate narrations, e-learning material, training videos, live presentations, social media content, telephone answering services, audiobooks, video games, animations, dubbed content, audio description and the list goes on…

To make a really long story short, I started as a singer and through various projects landed my first voice over gig in 2004. At the time, voiceover wasn’t my goal but I did keep it on the backburner. Life brought me back to voiceover a few years later when I became pregnant with my second child. That’s when I started my business as a part-time voice over artist while my first child took his daily 2 hour naps. It was one of the most difficult times of my life having two kids and trying to get work as a voice over artist but I knew that I had to do this because it was calling me. This line of work also aligned with my goals of wanting to work from home to be with my kids.

Then in 2019 I got the opportunity of a lifetime. I became the on-air promos voice for us Hispanic television network Unimás. This opportunity changed my life. I began recording promos for the network daily. Subsequently, I got more agents and now I’m booking wonderful commercial work at local, regional, and national levels in the United States and globally.

My specialty within the industry is seamlessly transitioning between Spanish and English copy/text. I was always told Spanglish wasn’t a language and that I had to choose one or the other. Well folks, this is my moneymaker. There’s A LOT of Spanglish content to voice. I want to work on more content geared towards architecture and interior design as well as sustainability in general. Those are personal interests that I would love to mix into my work and lend my voice to.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, let’s do a mix of adult and kid friendly activities. The Frost Museum is one of my favorite places to take kids. The PAMM is also a beautiful art museum and I love the store and the restaurant as well. We like walking around Coconut Grove and often secure a table at Glass & Vine near the playground so that we can sip while the kids play. Such a convenient spot with good food. We live in Doral and it now has some wonderful places to hang out. We personally love to eat at Shoma Bazaar which has various food options. Downtown Doral also has wonderful food options such as Bulla and there are so many playgrounds around the area that kids enjoy. I would search for any good concerts around the area and maybe hang out at Wynwood or near the Design Ditrict for some cocktails and window shopping.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so many shoutouts, I definitely don’t do this alone. My family deserves the first shout out. They have encouraged me to go after my dreams since day 1 and I couldn’t be more grateful to them. They also understand how complicated it can get when Mama has to leave a theme park or pull over to record TV promos from the car. They deserve the world for understanding “esta locura”. My brother who we call Jandy and his wife Andrea. They are my emergency babysitters and Jandy also helps me with audio conundrums every once in a while. There’s my coach and friend, Luly B. who ecouraged me to go after my “low hanging fruit” back in 2016. Thanks to her I had the courage to start my voiceover business. A huge shout out to my Boricua voiceover friends who have supported me from the very beginning: Antonio Fornaris and Raul Reyes. I’ve learned so much from you two. There’s also Alfonso Lugo, my demo producer and business coach, who has opened the door to so many possibilities. My Go-To voiceover business podcasts that offer so much value and real world advice, VOpreneur by Marc Scott and VO Boss by Anne Ganguzza. My past and current voiceover coaches Simone Fojgiel and Dave Walsh. My lovely agent Aidita Alamo who gave me my first shot and booked me on my most lucrative VO job as of yet, the On-Air promos voice for Unimas TV Network in the Hispanic US Market. David Salazar also my agent at DPN Talent in Los Angeles. Marc Guss at ACM Talent in NY. I’m always reading up and learning about business, human behavior, and decision making and two of my most favorite books are Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain and The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.
