Perspectives on Risk-Taking

There is a wealth of academic research that suggests that differences in risk appetite are at the heart of differences in career and business trajectories. We wanted to go beyond the theory and ask real people from the community about their perspectives and experiences with risk and risk taking.
To me, risk taking is defined by throwing yourself into an unknown situation, you also expose yourself to potential danger. In my case, I can say I’m quite comfortable with risk taking as it has defined most of my life and career. You see, as a nomad and expatriate, I’ve relocated 15 times and traveled to 50 countries. Both relocating and traveling are considerable steps into the unknown. Read more>>
I think that one risk can change your whole entire life. I believe that everyone had to take a risk to get something that they wanted. So why not risk well. Take myself as an prime example. I Love what I do. That one risk I took played a big part of my success. When everyone goes left I’ll be the one to risk to go right. Read more>>
“No risk, No gain” is my life philosophy. If you do not risk, there is no progress. We are intimidated by the unknown, however, to begin with we did not know anything. I (we) learnt whatever little i (we) know along the way formally or informally. Every day, i try to learn something new, however trivial it might be. I learn from my interactions with parents, students, tutors, vendor, my employees, friends, family members, people at large, by reading books, news articles, seminars, workshops etc. Read more>>
What a great question. For me i believe that in order to get ahead in order to truly live the life you always dreamed, there will almost always be some risk that is involved. The reason why i say that is because risk is like a seed. We have the power to plant the seed and we have the power to water the seed but we dont determine all the details of the seeds growth. Now with that being said we still do everything in our power to create the right environment for the highest yielding crop. Read more>>
Taking a risk is basically how I started my business. When I graduated college in 2020 I really wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my degree. My degree is in Business Administration with a emphasis in marketing from the Illustrious Bethune-Cookman University. Post-gradI decided I wanted to do marketing but I didn’t want to work for a marketing agency. So I just took a risk and started my own digital marketing agency which started with one client in April 2021 but by taking that risk I now have 8 clients as of June 2021 and growing month by month Read more>>
The relationship I have with risk is a new one. Before, I played it safe, all the time. I needed to know exactly what would happen if I did something in particular. There could be no room for surprises or mishaps. With my music career, I lost that control. I had to take a leap and risk the world criticizing, liking or even wanting nothing to do with what I created. The reward though, the good parts, the highs and appreciation for sharing my passion makes it all worth it. Read more>>
On the other side of risk, there is always a reward. The reward whether a gain or a lesson we always gain something from taking risks. Risk-taking has played a huge role in my life. I felt stuck in doing a job that I wasn’t happy with as a new college graduate. I really wanted to enter into my profession as Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA). I was a single mother of a five-year-old. I saw a job advertisement for an OTA. Read more>>
I’ve always been a sort of over-thinker. Considering consequences and measuring my actions are a daily part of my life, after all, one of my mottos is “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst”. I’m grateful that I’ve not experienced the worst, and I’ve certainly taken a few risks in my time. Read more>>
I think the risk is like a door opener. When you put yourself at risk you develop tools to overcome that risk and the outcome of that will open a new door of possibilities. It makes you grow. I put myself at risk when I decided to work only in my profession, in what I love. And beyond the scariness, if you’re driven by passion you will always find the way. Read more>>
