We had the good fortune of connecting with Toby Gotesman Schneier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Toby, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Mine has been a career largely DEFINED by risk… I paint Human Suffering, the Human Experience, and the history of certain dark periods of time… Holocaust, Homeless,Slavery, and most recently, HIV/AIDS, … These are not always pretty subject matter, although they do have moments of pure beauty even through the epic pathos…The paintings require a certain brand of brutal honesty in order to appropriately resonate… Although thankfully, there are myriad collectors, museums, galleries who love and appreciate them, I would absolutely qualify the work I do as “RISK” in and of itself. Never easy to look at… Certainly not easy to paint….A footprint, if you will, to mark those periods of time, those ongoing subjects, visually…thru my art….
This is a Herculean question… My 22+ year career has been largely defined by my Holocaust Collection, singularly setting me apart from most other artists …
I am now incredibly honored to be working on a large, commissioned collection for The WORLD AIDS MUSEUM in South Florida with the subject matter being tied, of course, to Sexual Health, Orientation,Education and Awarness… I’ve painted the Homeless for the City of Fort Lauderdale…. Needless to say, the subjects I paint are human and vulnerable….sad, tragic, hopeful….the entire human experience actually… Lessons? How long do you have? The lessons are ENDLESS…..
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
It’s difficult to answer this question as this Pandemic continues its destructive path across our world… But of course the Florida BEACHES are magnificent… the most beautiful in the world… Noone should ever come to South Florida without seeing the beach every day…
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many to acknowledge… Communities of people directly related to my subject matter… People who have followed and supported my career for years… My wonderful collectors and patrons.. The countless Galleries and Museums who continuously stand behind my work…..
