Where are you from and how did your background and upbringing impact who you are today?

Through our work we have had the good fortune of seeing firsthand how success comes in every shape, size, color, faith, and orientation. More importantly we’ve learned that success is often the result of people embracing their unique backgrounds and so we’ve asked the community to tell us about their background and how it has impacted where they are today.
I was born in Canada to a Canadian father (white) and African mother (black), and raised internationally. I grew up between Canada, Africa and Europe to land in NYC and now am in Jamaica 🙂 I mention my parents ethnicity because it played a huge role in my formative year of relating to 2 worlds. Miami will always be home to me. My parents migrated from Alabama to Historic Overtown in the 1950’s. They were actually the second black family to live in the neighborhood at the time. I am from Jamaica, a place that holds the struggles and the dreams that have shaped who I am today. My background and upbringing have been integral in shaping my journey of resilience and determination. Growing up in poverty, I faced numerous challenges that tested my strength and resolve.
