We had the good fortune of connecting with Alyssa Gruber and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alyssa, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Connection and authenticity. The community that has built up around me & my business is incredible! In my yoga classes I like to make sure people feel comfortable & confident to do as little or as much yoga as they need for their body and to try to only focus on what happens on your own mat, or your little rectangle of happiness as I like to call it. There is no pressure to look or dress a certain way or morph in to a perfect Instagram looking yoga pose that is not safe. I offer options for varying levels and will definitely kick it up a notch when I see people excelling and can be challenged more. Most importantly, after every session I chat with the people who come to the yoga class. I think all of that builds trust and a community. I have seen new friendships develop, I’ve been invited to housewarming parties, birthdays, baby showers, people tell me about their vacations, we check up on them when we havent seen them in class for a while. That is the beauty and connection of yoga!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Much like a yoga practice, my career is ever evolving. Especially within 2020! I have been practicing yoga for about 20 years but only teaching and running as a business for 4. I have a background in entertainment, more specifically cruise ship entertainment so I am no stranger to hard work and a focus on customer experience. It’s also important to never get stale and keep pushing yourself. I am just about to start my final class to earn my MBA and cannot wait to be done but am glad to have that education in my back pocket. I regularly follow webinars, yoga business groups, take yoga workshops, follow larger fitness companies, etc. to keep an eye on trends and get inspiration. It gets exhausting to work full time, run a business, be in school, & maintain relationships but when you step back for a moment and look at what you accomplish its incredibly rewarding. Also the opportunity for a nap is something to relish 🙂
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anytime someone visits me it is a requirement they come to my Sunday yoga class at LauderAle! It’s such a hidden gem and also great if you are awaiting a flight or cruise ship. Overall I’m a low key local girl. I like taking people to the Hollywood Beach broadwalk because it has a little something for everyone. You can lounge on the beach, get some exercise along the broadwalk path without car traffic, but best of all is the people watching while you eat and drink. LeTub is a great local divey spot which is typically up my (and my friends) alley but occasionally I scrub up nice and wear something other than yoga pants in which case GGs on the intracoastal is my go to for a more upscale delicious meal and stunning sunset views. Kayaking at Oleta park is gorgeous and a great way to get moving and enjoy a mix of urban & beautiful nature scenery. Always love packing a picnic or a little park BBQ! I like to take out of towners to Ball & Chain for some Miami flair and great music! A late night tequeno is a great hangover prevention method. And again getting those water vibes, I’ll usually book some kind of catamaran or boating day trip. Who doesnt feel better with some salty sea air in their hair and sun on their skin!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost is always your family, right?! I have a lot of great support from friends and family but number one is my guy, Gabriel. He comes to almost every yoga class and people know and associate him with my business as much as they do me. He’s always enthusiastic about my endeavors, he gives constructive feed back, he moves tables, takes photos & more. Best of all, he’s happy to do whatever as long as I pay him in beer! I’d also like to give LauderAle brewery a shoutout. They are our original yoga and beer location, they let me completely take over their brewery every week, and are really easy to collaborate with. They deliver/ship all over so support a local small business and give them a try!
