We had the good fortune of connecting with David A Collier and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David A, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Creativity, I see things a bit ahead of when others see them. After that, passion drives perseverance, research, discipline, and all else. See www.theentity.us

Creatively and passion, that’s it for me. A few more words on passion. What makes me write at 3 am? What makes me halt the car to jot down a fresh novel idea? Why did I read countless articles last week on gravity or culture or genetics or tidally locked planets? Why have I worked so hard to get the Cevian ‘body’ right for its planet in Earth’s Ecocide: Ceva? Because I have a passion for what I’m doing. I love this tiny speck of wonder called Earth.

At the end of Earth’s Ecocide: Ceva (4th novel in the five-novel series), I may have a famous quote page and the quote that follows, fits my answer to your question.

“Logic will get you from A to Z. Imagination will get you everywhere.” Albert Einstein

A native of Paris and Lexington, Kentucky, David A. Collier earned two degrees at the University of Kentucky before entering the corporate world. He later returned to academic life and earned his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. For forty-one years, he taught all levels of students and participants in executive programs within the business schools of Duke University, the University of Virginia, The Ohio State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, and the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. As of early 2024, his research has attracted over 50,000 reads and is approaching 5,000 citations, according to one source, ResearchGate.

After decades of authoring award-winning research articles, business cases, and five college textbooks, he wanted a new challenge: writing novels that make a difference. He could have written a science fiction and fantasy book series with no relevance to issues of the day, but David didn’t choose the easier path. The following quote embodies the approach he followed in past academic and novel works: ”Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” (Source: Ralph Waldo Emerson).

David is the author of the five-star rated fiction series (www.theentity.us) Earth’s Ecocide, as well as Romance in My Rambler using the pen name David A. Bourbon. He lives in Florida with his wonderful wife. When not doing the tasks of everyday life, David reads astronomy, philosophy, sustainability, climate change, and science literature and enjoys family, grandkids, golf, boating, sports, and, of course, absolutely everything about nature. He dedicates the Earth’s Ecocide book series to those who love this tiny speck of wonder called Earth. We must protect our home!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh, one of my favorite day trips is to take a boat (I’m in a boating club) out of Naples Bay, cruise around, and end up docking at Snook Inn at Marco Island. Eat, drink, and listen to their band, and then work our way back to Naples Bay. Nature is all around us! I look with amazement at everything, the trees, their leaves and bark, dolphins, fish, the water, sandbars, and so on.

For me, I love planet Earth and all that must happen for it to be here! And for homo sapiens to be here. I don’t think the average person has any idea of the thousands of things that have to happen for Earth and us to be here! I do not take it for granted! This drives my deep passion to help the planet, and our species survive and avoid extinction. It’s that simple.

Take the planet. Earth’s operation and beauty depend on countless factors. Consider: What if Earth had no moon? What if we had one or two smaller moons? Why such a big moon? What does our moon do to enhance human survival?

We could repeat this discussion for “thousands of things” that relate to our and planet earth’s existence. What does it take for human DNA to prosper? What protects humans from radiation? Why does earth hold and keep its atmosphere? What’s the best size (i.e., mass) for a habitable planet? And so on.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I can start with my high school math teacher, at Paris High School (Kentucky) named Juanita Sutherland. She assigned hundreds of homework problems and we turned them in every class, the old fashion way. It worked! I took every math class they had at PHS.

A second shoutout goes to my high school football team members and Coach Ben Humphrey. At best, I was an average athlete. But you learn to play the play, it may be successful or a failure, get up and learn from it, and try again. You don’t quit! Perseverance! And you learn about teamwork.

I’ll jump to the PhD program at the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University, and three other PhD classmates and several faculty. Oh, did we work hard; 60 to 70 hours per week! We taught one another. Our PhD seminars on Friday afternoon from noon to 5 pm were classic. You never wanted to let down your peer group, so you were prepared, always! Kegs of beer followed. Saturday and some of Sunday were work days.

I noticed the question says books too. So, in my early years, I read and studied only science and math. I encountered Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler in college, likely during a undergraduate course. All I recall, the book shocked me, and I learned of the power of the written word. I’m a futurist, not a history buff, so others can better explain the impact of that book on humanity.
What was the moment or series of events that
