We had the good fortune of connecting with Ray Reynet and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ray, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
For me, starting my own business came out of necessity, conviction, and a desire for creative freedom.

I realized early on that if I wanted to protect my ideas, my characters, and the heart behind my stories, I needed to build something I controlled. I did not want to wait for permission to create, and I did not want my work filtered through systems that did not fully understand or value original voices. Creating Farlook Studios was my way of taking responsibility for my future and my art.

Having read biographies and studied the lives of my favorite creators like Walt Disney and Jack Kirby, I saw that their stories were not only success stories of creativity and inspiration, but also cautionary tales. They were geniuses who, early on, did not own the rights to some of their most important creations. I wanted to learn from that history and apply those lessons to my own path before even making the first book or product.

I also see business as an extension of storytelling. Building a studio is not separate from making comics. It is world building in a different form. Every decision, from self publishing to conventions, animation development, video game design, and long term planning, is about creating a sustainable ecosystem where my stories can live and grow.

Most importantly, I wanted ownership. Ownership of my time, my direction, and my values. I am inspired by creators who built their own paths and blended art with entrepreneurship without compromising their vision. Starting Farlook Studios allowed me to bet on myself, learn the entertainment industry from the inside out, and prove that original, heartfelt work can find its audience when you are willing to put in the work and take the risk.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is rooted in storytelling first. Everything I create, whether if it’s a comic, an illustration, or an animation, is built around emotion, meaning, and character. Visually, my work is explosive, colorful, and cartoon driven, inspired by the golden foundations laid by creators like Walt Disney, Jack Kirby, and Darwyn Cooke, while filtered through my own modern voice. What sets my work apart is that it is unafraid to balance wonder and darkness. I explore faith, love, hope, and perseverance while also confronting evil, fear, and the human struggle. Honestly, I want my stories to feel timeless, approachable, and sincere, something that can resonate across generations.

I have deeply studied the great epic literature from Dante, Milton, Homer, and Ovid. I strive to elevate JUNKET into a modern national epic for the comic medium. My goal is to subvert reader expectations while expanding what comics can achieve, pushing the art form into a space that is light-hearted, emotionally resonant, and intellectually sophisticated. Rather than treating comics as disposable entertainment, I approach them as literature, mythmaking, and fine art, a serious storytelling medium capable of exploring timeless human themes, better than any other medium. My stories center on genuine transformation. Characters do not remain static, they evolve, struggle, fail, grow, and change in response to real-life challenges and fantastical metaphors. Through mythic conflict, moral trials, humor, faith, darkness, and hope, I aim to reflect the emotional reality of the human condition while crafting worlds that feel expansive, meaningful, and alive. A timeless tale.

“JUNKET: Hidden Worlds Revealed” is a national-epic-style comic series about Oscar Oakley, an ordinary modern man going through a mid-life crisis. He quits his job in search of adventure and meaning, hoping to escape a life that feels empty and routine. Along the way, he meets the masked Groundskeeper, who is actually a park ranger and the secret protector of a hidden, ancient enchanted forest. Together, they must face the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as supernatural forces begin to threaten reality itself. With no superpowers, they battle monsters, navigate time travel, confront self-reflection, and explore the depths of human nature, turning an end-of-the-world conflict into a deeply personal journey about growth, purpose, and hope.

What I am most proud of is building something from the ground up. I did not wait for permission to create. I self-published multiple books through Amazon, founded Farlook Studios, built my own distribution, appeared at conventions, and expanded my stories into animation and early game development. Seeing Junket: Hidden Worlds Revealed grow from scattered ideas in my youth into a living world with readers and supporters is deeply meaningful to me. I am especially excited about pushing these stories further through animation and interactive media while staying true to their heart.

Professionally, I got to where I am through consistency, faith, and a willingness to learn every side of the craft. From drawing comics in my college newspaper to releasing my own titles like The Last Crusader, Gunny, and Junket, each step taught me something new. It was not easy. There were financial limitations, industry barriers, self doubt, loss, and moments where continuing felt uncertain. I overcame those challenges by staying disciplined, surrounding myself with encouragement, and remembering why I started in the first place. I treated setbacks as lessons instead of endings.

The biggest lessons I have learned are the importance of ownership, patience, and self-belief. Owning your work matters. Progress takes time. And faith in your calling has to be stronger than fear. I have also learned that building a career in art requires both creativity and responsibility. Passion opens the door, but consistency keeps it open.

What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that it is built on sincerity. I am not chasing trends or shortcuts. I am building worlds with purpose. My stories are meant to encourage, challenge, and remind people that there is meaning in perseverance and beauty even in struggle. Farlook Studios represents faith driven creativity, bold expression, and the belief that original stories still matter.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting for a week, I’d want to give them a real taste of South Florida, not just the tourist version. We’d start slow with good food and long conversations, probably grabbing Cuban food first, somewhere local with strong coffee, pastelitos, and a sense of history. That’s always the best way to set the tone.

A few days would be spent outdoors. I’d take them to the beach early in the morning or right before sunset, when it’s quiet and you can actually feel present. We’d walk, sketch, talk about life, and just breathe. I’d also want to show them the Everglades or a nature preserve, somewhere you can feel how wild and unique Florida really is. That sense of scale and nature always inspires me.

We’d definitely spend time in Wynwood and the Design District, checking out galleries, murals, bookstores, and creative spaces. I love places where art feels alive and part of the community. We’d pop into small shops, maybe catch a local event or exhibition, and talk to artists. Those kinds of environments are energizing.

Evenings would be simple. Good food, maybe a low key bar or café, live music if it feels right, or just hanging out late talking about ideas, faith, art, and the future. I’m less interested in nightlife chaos and more into places where you can actually connect.

At some point in the week, I’d probably bring them into my studio space, show them what I’m working on, flip through old sketchbooks, and share the process. For me, that’s a big part of the experience. Creating, reflecting, and being honest about the journey.

By the end of the week, I’d want them to leave feeling rested, inspired, and grounded. South Florida, at its best, is a mix of culture, nature, creativity, and quiet moments. That’s the version I’d want to share.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would dedicate my shoutout first and foremost to Jesus Christ. Through seasons where pursuing art can feel hopeless, uncertain, or even seemingly delusional, and through the passing of family and loved ones, mourning, and dark times, He has always been the light and hope in my life. I am grateful above all else for being saved from myself and given purpose beyond my own understanding.

I also want to dedicate this to my family, especially my mother and my grandparents, for their unwavering love, sacrifices, and belief in me. Their support laid the foundation for everything I do. To my childhood friends, thank you for being there in those early days, bouncing ideas around, listening to big dreams, and believing I could do what I said I would do long before there was proof.

I want to recognize my art school professors and teachers who helped guide me along the way, offering encouragement, discipline, and perspective when I needed it most. Their mentorship played a meaningful role in shaping both my craft and my confidence.

Finally, thank you to everyone who reads my books and supports my work. Knowing that something I created could make even one person smile means the world to me. Thank you for believing in me. Without faith, I would be nothing, and none of this would be possible.
