We had the good fortune of connecting with Yvette Spicer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yvette, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Some people call me a serial entrepreneur as I have had various businesses including two hair salons, a clothing boutique, and an ice cream parlor featuring exotic tropical flavors. Starting a home care agency was not an easy decision for me. Especially, after leaving a twenty-five year career with a multi-national investment banking firm in New York City behind. I desired an enterprise that was much more fulfilling. Sonder Home Health was the first business enterprise that became very personal to me. In 2012, I had a life altering experience that helped catapult me into this industry. A vein had ruptured in my brain leaving me with significant physical and cognitive deficits. Thanks to the many kind and compassionate care providers who took care of all my needs – driving me to physical, occupational, and cognitive therapy appointments, cooking meals, bathing me, and sitting with me for hours sometimes just holding my hands. I knew everything would be all right. They gave me back my independence. That’s when I realized what my next calling would be. My mission and vision of taking care of others in their homes started taking shape. Sonder Home Health was created as a non-medical home care agency that services individuals in Palm Beach, Martin, and Port St. Lucie Counties. Home care isn’t for everyone. You need to be fully invested and passionate about helping others. Sonder Home Health was created to assist seniors and those with physical challenges to age in place in the comfort of their homes. Home care is such a vital service for so many people struggling with daily living activities -whether it’s personal care such as bathing or grooming, or homemaker services like cooking, tidying up the clients residence or just sitting and visiting with the client as a companion. I don’t think I would have started this business if I hadn’t experienced these services myself after recovering from the brain aneurysm. I now have a renewed purpose in life. My passion is to serve those who feel vulnerable in times of illness or old age. This experience gave me a new perspective on life. My favorite quote written by an unknown author is “I am not afraid of tomorrow for I have seen yesterday, and I love today!”
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sonder Home Health is a family owned and operated home care agency specializing in caring for the aging and others with limited physical abilities. My daughter, Dr. Nia Spicer-Thomas is the Director of Nursing who trains our staff following all CDC and OSHA guidelines. Safety is very important to us, especially in this environment with Covid. Nia and I noticed the lack of affordable wrap around care for seniors and others and therefore created a one-of-a-kind solution that alleviates family fears and allows loved ones to age in place safely. We are very blessed to have great staff that share our vision and are committed to providing our clients with first class service.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Victoria’s Pisco Lounge is a quaint Peruvian restaurant located in the artsy Lake Worth area. On weekends they have live music, but the main attraction is their authentic Peruvian foods. It is absolutely delicious! Great service as well! I also like Lynora’s Restaurant in downtown West Palm Beach. They have the best homemade pasta entrees! If you like a lively atmosphere, check out their Sunday Brunch where you will find a DJ playing spirited dance hall music. Also, if you enjoy Sunday Brunch and bottomless mimosas, there’s no better place than Shooters Waterfront on the Intracoastal waterway. It is stunning, especially in the evening after the sun goes down!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I give thanks to God, my husband and children for bringing me through the storm!
