We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabrielle Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabrielle, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have spent most of my life admiring art, the emotions it is capable of producing, the messages that can be brought to anyone who sees it, its peaceful ability to transcend differences. Having lived in the North East and the Caribbean and traveling to many countries I have found that the uniqueness of an area is derived not only from people and culture buts its reflection of architecture and natural resources. I try to make each piece of art I create a story, whether it is an architectural piece, or my translation of human character, or the beauty of our environment and all those that we share this earth with. I enjoy exploring and being a visual artist is a perfect way to expand my horizons. I love to experiment with different media and learn new techniques that I can apply to my work with my voice. Everyone is creative, it is creative expression that allows us to grow.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It is hard for me to say what sets my work apart from others, but I can guarantee that each piece is infused with love and passion to bring joy to those who see it. While I have enjoyed more success than I could have initially imagined I have learned some very important lessons along the way. The first is that we are our own worst critics. I have had to learn not to judge myself. I have had to learn to let go of some efforts and realize that they are a lessons learned and that there is perfection in the imperfection. Every failed experiment has value. Secondly I have learned not to compare myself to others and to realize that my work will not translate to everyone, it is not about wide acceptance, it is about the intimate connection when someone loves your work. But most importantly I have learned that loving what you do is empowering.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One priority would be visiting the Galleries in Key West and the Florida Keys. Everywhere I go I make that a focus because I get inspired by the work of other artists and want to support them. I frequent local restaurants, locally owned shops, but the most important place to spend time here is outside enjoying the beautiful views, wildlife, and the peace of being in mother nature.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who have lifted my on my journey. First and foremost my late husband who believed in my art and supported me at the beginning without hesitation. He made it his priority because he saw my passion and joy when I was creating a piece. I was also blessed to be in a community of artists when I began to expand my visual art career, helping me with details related to business, finding opportunities to show my work, and critiques that are invaluable. That community is still surrounding me and I have done my best to do the same for artists who look to me for guidance.
