Meet Sasha Olsen | The Girl Behind Legends From Mom’s Closet

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sasha Olsen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sasha, what principle do you value most?
I really value education! To me, the most important thing we can do for ourselves is learn. I love reading biographies about legendary people. That was the inspiration behind starting my project. The reason why I love education so much is because I think we can change the world through knowledge. It’s also amazing to understand more about legendary people’s lives and look up to them! Their success, dedication, and hard work to make a difference is what motivated me to share their stories with other kids in a fun and exciting way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I started this project, I was 10 years old. I had been reading about Frida Kahlo, and then I got the idea to play a little and dress up as her in my mom’s clothes. I realized that I learned even more about her by finding out the type of clothing she wore and how her art inspired how she dressed. That’s when I realized that sometimes we forget that learning can actually be really fun! Starting Legends from Mom’s Closet, writing the book, and continuing my project on Instagram feels like it’s a way for me to show other kids that we can be like these legendary people too. It just takes motivation and passion for what you love to do! I want the world to know that you can do anything you put your mind to especially if you have the education to go with it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since I’m a kid, I go most places with my family. Our favorite spots are definitely Wynwood and museums! We love looking at art pieces and hearing more about the history of our world. If someone was coming to visit us, I’m sure we’d take them to Vizcaya too. We always have a good time there, especially when we’re out in the gardens. I mean it’s a National Historic Landmark right here in Miami, how cool!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people who help me make my dreams come true! Of course, my family and friends… everyone who supports and believes in me. I do want to shoutout the book series “Who Was…?” for writing about legends’ lives and inspiring kids like me to get creative and share even more about who these people were. I guess I really just want to shoutout books themselves! Without them, I don’t know what we’d do!
