We had the good fortune of connecting with Ismael “Ish” Llano Darien ‘DJ’ Borges and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ismael “Ish” Llano, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As lifelong friends for nearly 30 years, we’d always thought we should have our own show…we love to talk about everything and anything so it just seemed like something we should do. Being two Cuban-American kids in Miami met (twice for the first time), we definitely have a perspective on things that’s informed as much by our culture as our city. A lawyer and ad guy might not seem the likeliest duo to host a weekly podcast, but we decided to do it anyway. Close as brothers, we tackle current events, pop culture, personal stories and anything else with viewpoints that could only be shaped by their Miami upbringing as much as each other. In the 4 years of the podcast, we’ve met many cool guests, hosted Miami events like Croquetapalooza and Carnaval on the Mile, even been on NBC primetime! In short, a typical week’s episode can be about anything, everything and absolutely nothing all at once…but always with a POV that’s 100% Latino y 100% Americano.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We’re just two guys who decided to grab some microphones so we could share our POV and have decided to use our platform to not only do that but interview other Hispanics/Latinos to continue sharing our shared cultural experiences while acknowledging the nuances as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmm we love to eat so we’d definitely go on a sort of eating tour of the city…breakfast of cuban toast and cafe con leche at Vicky’s Bakery, then lunch at either Sanguich where we could have a great Cuban sandwich in Little Havana or grab some gourmet croquetas in the Westchester area where we grew up from Dos Croquetas and dinner would definitely have to be at FINKA for some unique Korean/Cuban fusion before grabbing some Ave Maria cookies from Nightowl cookies
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In a weird way, we’d like to give a shout out to the misunderstood city of Miami. Most people think it’s just a playground for the rich but that’s not Miami at all (it’s Miami Beach, if we’re parsing). Having grown up in one of the US’ bigger cities that still acts like a small town, we have a perspective that should be seen more often Too many times Miami gets lumped into the ‘Florida stories’ angle of perception but we’re much more than that. And it’s helped us become who we are
