We had the good fortune of connecting with Keneisha Duncan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keneisha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was at the lowest that I’ve ever been in my life. Among the financial struggles I experienced at the time, was the ongoing chaos taking place inside of me – knowing what I wanted, what I wanted to achieve in my life, but only being able to see what was preventing me from achieving my dreams. That is, until I began reading the book, As a Man Thinketh by James Allen, and came across these words, “a change in diet will not change a man who will not change his thoughts.” Immediately, I realized what I was doing wrong. I knew what I wanted to achieve, but I wasn’t thinking about what I needed to do to make that a reality. Instead I was focusing on my limitations – why I wasn’t going to achieve what I wanted to achieve. I had a victim mindset. Stumbling upon that line by James Allen, I immediately got to work. I grabbed my pen and my notebook and began making plans. I started off with small, attainable goals that overtime translated to huge milestones. I changed my thoughts so I could change my life, and the many clients I’ve had the opportunity to help over the years are just an added bonus.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

My entrepreneurial journey was not easy. It alongside motherhood is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the most rewarding. Overcoming obstacles such as rejection, self-imposed limitations, fear of other people or rather, what other people thought of me, are only a few of the many challenges that I had to overcome.

It’s the lessons for me – the never ending lessons of entrepreneurship. One of the biggest lessons for me was learning to hone who I am and what I had to offer. This one lesson taught me principles like patience, courage, perseverance, sacrifice and the importance of authenticity – the ability to embrace who you are. It’s by doing this that I’ve discovered one of my greatest super powers – my uniqueness – the fact that no one else can be me!

Another great accomplishment for me is finishing my book, An Entrepreneur’s Guide to Level Success, which will be published later this year. In it I have explored several principles that I had to master over the course of my entrepreneurial journey and which helped me to realize my success. I can’t wait to share it with the world!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being a busy entrepreneur, I hardly have time for leisure, but when I’m free I love dinners at Gloria’s on the Waterfront in Kingston or Usain Bolt’s Tracks & Records, hiking the Blue Mountain, and I cannot fail to mention lunch at Hellshire beach in Portmore for the best seafood ever. Getting ice cream and walking the Devon House lawn makes for the perfect Sunday, but what’s a visit to Jamaica without visiting the Bob Marley’s museum?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My overall transformation began after reading the book, As a Man Thinketh by James Allen, but of course I have to give credit to other mentors such as David J. Schwartz through his book, The Magic of Thinking Big, Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Mastery by Robert Greene. My startup was rather intentionally quiet to reduce the noise of my naysayers, so I resorted to self-help books for support and mentorship.
