We had the good fortune of connecting with Memphis Garrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Memphis, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My entire life, I always knew I wanted to create and develop my own venues and concepts. So with every job I took, that was always in the back of my mind. I kept it to myself but used every job and opportunity to learn as much as I could.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that anything worth achieving will never be easy. I worked my way up from the bottom of a hospitality company. I was passed over for promotions and opportunities. I used those missed opportunities as motivation. I needed to learn more, I needed to become to best. I worked on every aspect of the business. I perfected the way I managed people. I learned that I needed to take a couple steps back and look at the entire operation. A lot of operators are good at a couple things but lack some key factors. I wanted to be great at every aspect. I worked 10 years for that company. Then I took the leap to go out on my own. Point Break Poke House is coming up on its 5 year anniversary and we are expanding; we are getting ready to open a shop in West Palm Beach and another in Plantation. I am very excited about this and it’s a perfect time. All of the Poke Houses will now be duel branded with our new sushi bento box concept, Blue Wave. This combination will provide our customers with a wide variety of raw fish options. That’s not all we are working on. The expansion of the corporate team is allowing us to open two new full service restaurant and bars this year: No Man’s Land and Ya Mas. Both are coming to downtown Ft Lauderdale in 2021.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
South Florida has so much to offer. For anyone coming to visit I have to get them out on the water. Take the boat out. Stop by Coconuts  in Fort Lauderdale and grab a bite to eat. A trip down to Miami is always a must. Hit Macchialina on Miami Beach for some amazing Italian. If you’re heading north, you must try Whale’s Rib in Deerfield Beach for great seafood.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has been a huge part of my success. They’ve supported me throughout the the ups and downs of my career, the moving from city to city, and all of the changes that take a toll.  My family has been supportive and has always been excited for me and the constant evolution of my career. I am grateful to have them in my life.
