We had the good fortune of connecting with Martina Rosenthal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Martina, how do you think about risk?
I’m not a fan of that word. To me labeling anything “risk” just adds a layer of fear and unpreparedness that you can use later as an excuse to fail or not try. Either you have a plan or not. Nothing is truly “risky” if you thought it through.
I like to call it pivoting, which is probably why my friends call me a “master of chess.” I’m always playing out my next 22 moves in my head. If I don’t have an exit strategy for the cons, I won’t act.
I’ve been very strategic my whole life, some decisions stand out more than others, but taking that leap, listening to my gut, and calculating the effort/reward ratio is what really built my wit, confidence, and character.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m really excited about this year. I recently moved to St. Peterburg and bought my first house which has been really fun to upgrade and design. It’s also been a fantastic year at work. I was able to really take my marketing ideas to the next level, and hire and grow my department. There is really no get-rich-fast scheme in being successful. It really does take close to 80-hour weeks, losing sleep because of thinking too much and asking yourself over and over if it makes sense.
My advice for tackling challenges is simple: be cruelly honest with yourself and have the conviction to accomplish your goals. I come from a family full of lawyers and financial advisors, so you can imagine their shock when I started showing signs of anything but those two career paths. To put it simply, one of my first words was “colores” which means ‘colors’.
They didn’t know what to do with me. Lots of standing up, rebelling, debating, forming my own thoughts, and defending my decisions have led me here. As long as you stick with that, you can’t go wrong. Work hard, prove them wrong, and just do it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A weekend trip to St. Petersburg/Tampa would include:
– Brunch at Oxford Exchange
– Driving through Hyde Park, Bayshore Blvd, and Ybor City.
– For lunch, I would make the drive to Safety Harbor for my friends to try Diablo pizza at Nonas Slice House and probably walk the neighborhood, get a coffee with a scone and people watch. – Nighttime or daytime activities can also include Downtown St. Pete for amazing breweries and restaurants and course, spending some quality time at the St. Pete Pier.
With more time I would include some other of my fav activities like Visiting Gulfport, Dunedin, Tarpon Springs going to the beach, and paddleboarding the west coast keys.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The list is long… but the first person that comes to mind, the one name I would underline and bold is my mom, María Cortés.
Success happens to people when our thoughts are aligned with our actions. For that connection to happen, you have to be thinking in a straight line. That straight line was created, drawn, and engraved in my brain by my mom.
While everyone else’s moms were asking their daughters when they were going to have a boyfriend, get married, or have babies, mine was asking me when I was going to get my master’s degree, become a CEO, or manage a team of people.
She taught me the importance of thinking for myself, using words with purpose, and understanding the source of my feelings.
