We had the good fortune of connecting with Malachy Poinan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malachy, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
Attending college. I feel like now with technology being so prevalent there’s so many different routes you can take to get a nice job without needing to attend a 4 year school and possibly sunk yourself into debt. I only partially disagree with going to college because some people definitely need that to achieve their goals and what they want to do in life sometimes college is absolutely a necessity but in others it can definitely be skipped especially in the case of pursing a job in the arts or entertainment I feel it’s more beneficial use the 4 years you would be in school to try to jump start and get your foot in the door. The con to this is you can make connections through school that help you get started but overall when it comes down to it I feel like having hands on experience outweighs that
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m mostly modeling for small local companies at the moment to build up a strong portfolio to bring to top tier agencies. I’m currently signed to a agency in Miami. Getting signed to them was one of the accomplishments I’m most proud of. To get to the spot I’m at I wouldn’t say was a hard journey there was a lot of research and learning involved but I enjoyed it so it wasn’t too challenging but I do think the hardest parts are coming up trying to get signed to top agencies. It’s going to take a lot of hard work and persistence I could get denied from the same agency a few times before they decided to call me back to work with me I can’t let them saying no get to me I just have to be ready to heard no and be sorta tough mentally
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think I’d probably start off by showing them downtown first there’s so many cool places to take pictures and explore it’s super cool there day two we live in Florida so you can’t forget the beaches so I’d definitely take them there there’s a super good boba place by the beach we’d go to after. Day three is show them one of my hobbies which is thrifting I’d take them to all the cool stores we have. Day four I’d take them to the farmers market and we could have some fresh fruit smoothies. Day five I’d take them to art walk it’s a place downtown that happens once a month where local artists can showcase and sell their art it’s super cool. Day six I’d probably take them to the skate parks we have some super cool ones and that’s one of my other hobbies. And on their last day I’d take them sight seeing in the oldest city in America st. Augustine. It’s beautiful there there’s so many things to do you can go to the light house, the oldest school house in America, ghost tours the list goes on I think it’s be an awesome way to cap off their trip
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My best friend cooper Jackson. He’s been like a big brother to me over the past five years. He’s thought me so many different things from screen printing a shirt to cooking breakfast he’s been there for my whole journey and I wouldn’t be where I am without him
