We had the good fortune of connecting with Celeste Burns and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Celeste, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor of my brand is the inclusion. My business has succeeded due to it’s loving message and my hard work at making it a safe space for all.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The thing that separates my work from others is my inclusivity. I started photography 10 years ago and focused on fashion, until I felt as though I wasn’t able to make a real difference in that field. As I started photographing more and more couples, I realized that my true passion lied in photographing queer couples and people. As a member of the LGBTQ community, I think representation of queer couples and queer weddings is so important. People need to see these examples in order to embrace them, so if there is no representation of these couples then there is much less tolerance and acceptance. There has been pushback along the way; from unsolicited negative comments on social media, to losing followers every time I post a photo of a queer couple. But overwhelmingly, the response has been positive. The most important feedback to me is from fellow members of the LGBTQ community who have said that I’ve made a difference in their own acceptance and love narrative. Not only do I try to make my business inclusive to the queer community, but I also make sure that people of all races feel represented beautifully too. Skin should look natural, no matter what the tone. Editing is important to highlight people’s skin and not every edit can be the same. I pride myself on representing ALL.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am not from Miami! But I would absolutely take my friend to Wynwood. The vibrancy, the art, and the energy is just out of this world, unmatched by any other place.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is a shoutout to my wife! Without her support, I would have never had the courage to risk it all and become my own boss. She has put up with many nights of tears and anxiety and has always believed that the success and pay-off would be greater than the hard parts. Every time I have thought about quitting this journey, she was right behind me to tell me that what I am doing is important.
