We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Chambers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charles, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“The worst anybody can tell you is ‘No’.” My pops has given me a lot of advice, but that’s always been my favorite. I think so many of us, myself included, miss out on opportunities because we’re paralyzed by the fear of not being accepted. Not being good enough. Especially as creatives. We pour ourselves into our work and it looks or sounds great to us, but when it comes time to present it to the people we want to impress, there’s no telling. Nobody wants to be told their work won’t cut it, but the reality is rejection doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It can bury us or it can fuel us. It can be defeat or it can be a lesson learned. Even just gathering the courage to face the fear of rejection and give it a shot, regardless of the outcome, can do a lot to boost self confidence. I think the most important thing to keep in mind is that for every person who tells us no, there’s someone else who would say yes. It’s all about perseverance.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m currently in the process of launching my audio production business, Charles Chambers Media. I offer a range of services including recording, editing, scoring, sound effects, just about anything related to sound in music and film. I’ll also be selling instrumentals and loop packs for any artists or producers looking for something new, and creating my own subscribable SFX library in the future.

My path here was a little unconventional. Five years ago I was sitting in my dorm depressed because I was approaching the end of my time in college and really had no passion to get a career in the degree I had spent years working towards, but I had no idea what else I wanted to do with myself. While I was sitting there flipping through TV channels, I caught one of my favorite movies, the first Pirates of the Caribbean. I always loved that movie because it sounded incredible. The music, the effects. Even as a kid, where most would be drawn to watching the film, I remember being blown away by what I was hearing. It wasn’t until that moment in my dorm that I ever considered that creating all that was someone’s job, and that someone could be me. I graduated the next year and immediately enrolled in audio engineering school. From there I worked on several podcasts, a Youtube series, and most recently a video game and a documentary. I realized very quickly that music and film audio is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, and now here I am starting the business that’s going to make that possible.

More than anything, I’m really just excited to work with great people on meaningful projects. I want to get outside the box and do weird, unconventional things just to see what happens. I want to create something new, and form great relationships along the way. If I can do that, my business is a success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I just moved to San Diego a few months ago so I’m still getting used to the area myself, but I’ve definitely settled on a few favorite spots already. Of course first and foremost, we’d get plenty of time in at the beaches. My favorites are La Jolla Shores and Coronado. We’d probably take a boat out on Mission Bay and cruise around for a few hours, then hit up one of the taco stands. We’d for sure have to hit up Balboa Park on a Wednesday evening and catch the live jazz show. As far as food goes, I really haven’t had a miss here yet. Everything is good, we could probably pick anywhere and end up with a great meal. If we had to get picky though, I’d probably hit up one of the Korean BBQ spots and eat way too much. On the weekend, brunch at Cafe 21 is always the move.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been fortunate to have always been surrounded by an extremely supportive community. Friends, family, friends of family, I really do appreciate more people than I can name. But I have to give special shoutouts to my brothers JerMari, Taji, and DJ. We’ve fought through our lowest lows and celebrated our highest highs together since kids. I can always rely on them to keep it 100% real no matter what, whether we’re bouncing ideas off each other or working through personal stuff. Every success for them on their paths feels like a success for me, and vice versa. And of course I have to give a special shoutout to my girl, my biggest supporter, Myla. That woman is the definition of “If I want it, I’m going to get it”. Determination like nobody I’ve ever met in my life. I really don’t know how she does it, but I aspire to be like her every day and I’m a better person because of it. Having a woman like her by my side and my boys at my back, I feel like I can’t lose.
