We had the good fortune of connecting with David Zolo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I can say, without any doubt, that I owe my success to the engines of my motivation, which drive me to improve every piece of art I create. I owe my success to the commitment I have to my country, to my roots, to my city of Medellín, and to every flower grower from there, because it is thanks to them that I have roses to immortalize on my canvas. I owe my success to the loving memory of my mother, from whom I inherit the DNA of a relentless fighter. I owe my success to the promise of proving to myself that if I believe in myself, I can achieve whatever I set my mind to.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My artistic career has been a rollercoaster of experiences, as I have had the opportunity to transition from selling my art pieces on the streets of Buenos Aires alongside artisans, to having pieces from my collection displayed in galleries in Miami and London. I can definitely say that I am proud of the path I have walked so far, and I feel as excited as I did on the first day.
This lifestyle has afforded me the chance to meet many people, some of whom I consider my mentors due to the invaluable teachings they have imparted. I have learned countless things, although I couldn’t possibly list them all. However, I believe the most crucial lesson I’ve learned is to embrace the process and acknowledge that every journey has its highs and lows, each offering valuable lessons.
Pursuing art as both a career and a lifestyle is not easy, but that is one aspect of my story that I want the world to know — that despite everything, with passion, faith, and unwavering motivation, one can overcome any obstacle and achieve not only their set goals but even surpass them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my friend, or anyone, to the place that I feel the strongest connection with, which is Santa Elena. It’s in this town where I first started practicing art and set up my workshop. I love everything about this place—its history, its people, and especially the individuals who grow the roses that have inspired me to tell many stories through my art.
I would take a walk in the woods, listening to the sounds of nature, stroll along the creek, and play with Maui, my dog. I would invite my friend to join the ‘Feria de las Flores,’ becoming part of this iconic parade of Medellín, where they could meet the flower growers who are an integral part of the history of my city and the inspiration behind my paintings.
We would also venture into the mountains to breathe the fresh air, and at night, we would definitely gather around a bonfire with friends and enjoy some typical food from Medellín.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize the source of all my inspiration which is my hometown Medellin, and all the farmers and flower growers who, like me, strive to elevate the reputation of our city. I also want to honor the loving memory of my mother, who passed away three years ago. She always believed in me and my talents. Sadly, she didn’t get to witness the fruition of the seeds she saw me plant. However, she remains in my heart, and her spirit resonates in every creation I make. I am grateful for all the children I’ve had the opportunity to work with, as well as my niece and nephew, as I see the future of the world in them. I am a firm believer in the future.
