We had the good fortune of connecting with Elyse Berman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elyse, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in New York and have been living in the Boca/Delray area for 25 years. I grew up with wonderful parents who were kind, smart and had integrity. I didn’t realize it at the time, but there was no other way but the truth. The only thing I couldn’t have was a dog! So the day I moved into the city, I got a dog and have had at least one (or more) ever since. Kids in New York grow up street smart. I think this had a lot to do with who I became, along with being a court reporter in New York. Court Reporting gave me a great background and taught me many things. I saw people with integrity and those without. To me, integrity is everything. Unfortunately, I got sick and had to give up reporting. I am lucky to have had a second career in real estate. It was through my passion for real estate, dogs and the law that I am who I am today. I am a pet-friendly real estate agent helping people buy and sell homes (with our without pets.) I am also a blogger who blogs about pet-friendly real estate, and I volunteer my time on the Grievance Committee for the Board of REALTORS®, which is a lot like court reporting. I belive I am the sum of my experiences and the impact they had on me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
A seasoned REALTOR® who grew up in New York, I am a retired Court Reporter currently residing in Delray Beach, FL with my husband and two dogs. Since moving to Boca Raton 25 years ago, we (and our dogs, of course!) have owned five homes; two in Boca Raton, two in Delray Beach and one in Boynton Beach. It was through my love of real estate, the law and her dogs that I found her passion helping others find pet-friendly homes in Boca Raton and the surrounding areas, for both dogs and cats. When a condo turned us down that was pet friendly to one dog up to 60 lbs, but refused to allow her 2 furkids weighing a whopping total of 16 lbs, that was it. I was incensed. I could not see the logic in this at all. By running into walls and rules that made no sense, I made it my mission to help others. Of course, I also work with people who have NO pets! Absolutely! My knowledge of the local real estate market is extensive. Not only did I watch them build many of the communities, my husband and I spent every weekend visiting open houses over the past 25 years going back to the days of the big Sunday newspapers. I volunteer my time on the Grievance Committee for the Board of REALTORS®, where I keep on learning. The Grievance Committee is a lot like court reporting, which is why I love it. I am personally with you from first contact through closing and beyond, helping to help ease the stress of the home-buying and home-selling experience for my clients. I like happy clients! I answer my phone and won’t pass you off to a team member. I’m available 24/7. Having made the move myself with a husband, three kids, two dogs and a business, I am all too aware of the challenges facing people moving to and from south Florida with their beloved pets. Back in 1994,I was looking for a pet-friendly gated community in Boca Raton. There are many gated communities that have pet restrictions, pet-friendly condos and both all-age communities and 55+ Active Adult communities. An avid dog owner and lover, I am is very familiar with all the communities that will accept your furry friends. I would never ask you to move anywhere that would not accept your pets. Why? Because I wouldn’t do it! That’s just the way it is. So you can be sure, I will never ask you to get rid of a pet, or waste your time. In order to better serve my clients, I have attained the following designations along with membership in the following organizations: CRS – Council of Residential Specialists ABR – Accredited Buyer’s Representative GRI – Graduate Realtors Institute E-PRO – Internet Certified – Technology Certification Program Member National Association of Realtors Member Florida Association of Realtors Member Realtors Association of the Palm Beaches + Greater Fort Lauderdale Realtors 2018 Member Grievance Committee Realtors Association of the Palm Beaches + Greater Fort Lauderdale Realtors 2019 Member Grievance Committee Realtors Association of the Palm Beaches + Greater Fort Lauderdale Realtors 2020 Member Grievance Committee Realtors Association of the Palm Beaches + Greater Fort Lauderdale Realtors (Edit)
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Downtown Delray for the strolling the shops and galleries. Lunch at Deck 84 on the water. Downtown Boca Raton – Mizner Park and Royal Palm Place. Lunch at Max’s Grille. Catch a move at the IPic. The beach – definitely a day at the beach. Maybe a trip to Palm Beach to see its beauty. Great thrift shops! Ride to Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale. Ridge to Margaritaville – lunch at Le Tub!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Otto was a high-speed teacher and well regarded in the field of court reporting. I passed my 225s (225 words per minute) and graduated. Otto became my friend and mentor. He encouraged and guided me. Having a 5 year old, I was older than many people in class. I spent many Monday nights and Saturday mornings with other professional court reporters in extra speed classes and discussions. I was lucky to have a mentor in real estate named Lou Ludwig . I met Lou in a Continuing Ed class many years ago. There were about 14 people in the class. I listened and learned from Lou, taking GRI and several other classes with him. In fact, he was the reason I started blogging Lou said to everyone in that class, back in 2009, If you aren’t on Active Rain, you ought to be. So I signed up. Lou is one of those rare people who wants to see you succeed and will help you get there. Both Otto and Lou were great mentors and supporters of my efforts to become both a Court Reporter as well as a real estate agent.
