We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabriela Mekler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabriela, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Founded in 2014 by Mexican-born Miami-based entrepreneurs Gabriela Mekler and Maribel Moreno, mumi Design originated with a simple yet monumental mission – delivering a practical way to stay organized at home, school, in the office or while traveling.

Gabriela and Maribel first met at prenatal yoga when they were both expecting their first child, and they instantly became inseparable. They did everything together; their children grew up like cousins, shared the same family values, and spent the holidays together like family.

The two busy moms often talked about going into business together. While on vacation together one summer in Valle de Bravo, Mexico, they realized how both of their luggages were meticulously packed and organized. That’s when the idea of developing packing cubes for families came to fruition. They started working on the concept of assigning one color for each family member – something that is still an essential aspect of their brand.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a child psychologist. However, after working many years in that realm, I wanted to do something different. When I met my business partner Maribel, we both had two young kids at the time and wanted to pursue a career that would allow us more control of our time. We both wanted to spend more quality time with our children, and we felt that applying for a 9 to 5 job would go against the lifestyle that we were looking for. So it was the perfect time to start our own business.

Basically, the idea behind mumi was inspired by juggling the busy schedule of motherhood while trying to be as organized as possible.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start by checking into the Spa at The Standard. We’d take a yoga class, have a nice treatment, then hang by the pool until dinner time and go for drinks and food at The Lido. I love Little River; it is one of Miami’s more up and coming areas. I would take her there and we would visit Plant the Future to enjoy their beautiful garden and art with plants. Then we’d go for lunch at any of the super hip restaurants – La Natural being my absolute favorite – and then would visit ICA for some art.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to say that person is Lilaj Segal – she is a talented branding specialist and is the one who designed our brand book. She’s one of my best friends, has been incredibly supportive since the beginning, and helped us create an incredible foundation for the company. Our strong branding is what continues to set us apart from many other companies out there, and we are very proud of that. We couldn’t have done it without her!
