We had the good fortune of connecting with Giselle Coujil and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Giselle, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
We went to graduate school together many years ago. When we were finishing our studies, we were having dinner and talking about the future. We had this idea to open Obras Studio, an office that would produce high quality design based on the modernist principles we were taught and believe in. Although we were not able to do this after graduation, and went down separate paths gaining varied work experience, 20 years later we came together and opened Obras Studio.
What should our readers know about your business?
There are many Architecture and Design firms in our market. What we believe sets us apart from many of our competitors is our dedication to excellence in design. We are a detail-oriented firm and, as every one of our projects is custom, we approach each new project as an opportunity to create something special for our clients, who are essentially our partners in the design process.
Also, we offer both Architecture and Interior Design Services. We feel these disciplines are inextricably linked. Our most successful projects are the ones in which we offer both services. This creates a seamlessness in the Design and an overall more cohesive and intentional environment.
Starting our firm was not easy. We started during the pandemic and had only a handful of small projects. Although challenging, we used this first year to establish what we wanted Obras Studio to be. It’s easy to become so focused on the work, you go from project to project and overlook the big picture. We try to look forward as much as possible, towards what we want the future of our company to look like.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are grateful to live and work in such a beautiful, dynamic and diverse community. We would definitely recommend taking in some of the city’s cultural offerings, such as a visit to the PAMM or a lecture at Books and Books, as well as absorbing Miami’s tropical landscape. We would recommend a day at the beach, a walk-through Fairchild Tropical Gardens and a visit to the everglades. We live in a tropical paradise and, as Architects and Designers, it provides us the opportunity to engage the built environment we create with the natural one.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would like to thank the University of Florida’s School of Architecture for providing us with a solid educational foundation and igniting our passion for this field.
