We had the good fortune of connecting with Ivanea Lanza and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ivanea, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe that risks are a great opportunity to grow and overcome a comfort zone that would rather weigh you down . If you don’t take risks, then you won’t gain. Ever since I was a child, I was always a risk taker. I would have to say that one of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken was to emigrate into the United States. As a teenage mother, both my daughter and I’s futures were completely at risk. I emigrated to the United States from Honduras at just twenty one years old and didn’t get to see my daughter for the next two years. After two years of living in the United States, I was finally reunited with my daughter and that’s when I made the decision to move to Miami with no support. From then on, everything has been a risk in regards to all different aspects of my life. Having chosen this career, I was aware my salary would be based on the amount of work I had, and that in itself was a risk taking into consideration that I was the sole provider of my household and child. Basing your salary off of commissions to me, is taking a risk as well because it’s always pushing you out of your comfort zone. During the pandemic once businesses reopened, I took yet another great risk by moving to a new salon after having being in the same salon for seven years.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Personally I feel the thing that sets me apart from others has to be the passion and love I have for my career. I work with love and do everything I do because I truly enjoy and love my career. I am most proud of the skill level I have gained in regards to color technique, which has to be the part I enjoy the most out of my career. I am definitely excited to keep improving and see where my career will take me. One of the most important things that has helped me reach the level that I am at today professionally is constant education as well as being open minded and learning from others. I consider that I am always learning from others therefore I will forever be a student. I can say it was not easy to get to where I am at today but with hard work and dedication I have been able to overcome any obstacles in my career. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that you truly have to believe in yourself and what you are capable of because nobody else will do it for you. Another important lesson I have learned is that as a professional you have to learn to value yourself. One thing I want the world to know about Soul and Hair is that I gave my brand this name because I truly believe that they are two components that go together. My goal as a professional is to be able to have my clients feel beautiful inside and out. Lastly I want the world to know that hair is my canvas and it’s my expression of art.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Miami is definitely a great city to explore and have a lot of fun in. Out of all the many exquisite places, it’s hard to just choose a few. The Alchemist has to be one of my favorite places to brunch at. The vibe and food is great, and overall a lot of fun for an outdoor experience. For dinner I would take my friend to Ceviche 105. This restaurant offers a great variety of food to please different pallets and is one of the best Peruvian spots. I would take my friend to drink at Astra. It has to be one of my favorite spots in the city due to the beautiful view and sunset. Another restaurant I would definitely take my friend to would be La Mar. It offers a great ambiance with the beautiful city view at night, the delicious drinks, and amazing food. I would take my friend to hang out at Wynwood. Wynwood is an amazing place to explore, take in beautiful art, and try new foods as well as drinks. There are many different places which can explored within a short distance from each other meanwhile you can take in the beautiful graffiti all over. My favorite places to hang out would be rooftop restaurants and bars such as Sugar and Juvia, To have fun and dance I would take my friend to El Tucan and many others.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my daughter. She has been the motor of my life ever since she was born and she pushes me to be the best version of myself. Not only this but, she has given me the strength to keep improving myself and our quality of life. I dedicate this to my mom because without her support my daughter and I wouldn’t even be here in this country. she is a big part in my success!

There are three people who have especially supported me throughout my personal and professional development. They have been my mentors and friends throughout my career and have helped shape who I am today. I want to give many thanks to Milagros and Salvatore Trimarchi as well as Lorena Coyle.

Thank you to all my friends and family who have been with me throughout the entire journey and have never lost faith in what I am capable of. Thank you for believing in me.
