We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Schwartz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jake, what principle do you value most?
For me, it’s all about getting better. Every day I wake up with the simple goal of being better than I was yesterday. Everyone has long-term goals, and dreams they want to realize over the course of a lifetime. But the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time, and the best way to achieve the life of your dreams is to take action today that will put you in a better position than yesterday. When you have this “better than I was yesterday” mindset, you’ll start to develop affinity for healthy change (and therefore growth), because you’ll always be seeking out ways to improve. Keep in mind – no one asks if you had the best workout of your life, they just ask if you went to the gym. Take action, and be better than you were yesterday.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I performed my first magic trick at the age of two years old. I was a very picky eater, and so my parents would ask me to make my food “disappear” in hopes of getting me to eat. The game worked (I did eat better as I grew up), but more importantly it sparked my interest in one of the oldest and most secretive art forms in the history of the world. Interest turned into obsession and by the age of ten I decided I loved magic so much that I would devote my life to it. Most people have a cookie-cutter image of what a magician should be (black tux, top hat, white gloves, rabbit, cane…any of that sound familiar?). Well, it is my mission to blow up that mold. I’ve pulled cards out of sealed cans of cranberry sauce, I almost tackled a host live on TV, and I’ve even gone on tour with a professional baseball team, where the audience got to see a magic show and a baseball game….at the same time. Showing the world how amazing the art of magic can be is truly my greatest joy and purpose in life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, my city is Philadelphia, so the first stop is obviously to watch whatever team is playing that day. We love our Flyers/Eagles/Phillies/Sixers/Union in Philly! I love visiting Reading Terminal Market, and (in my humble opinion) the best Philly snack is a soft pretzel and water ice (or should I say, wooder ice). The hammock park at Penn’s Landing by the river is one of my personal favorite spots, especially on a summer evening. The city of brotherly love has so much culture, and truly too many incredible spots to name.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my parents, Dr. Len and Staci, who are largely responsible for the person I am today. I am so thankful they gave me a fishing pole and not a fish (metaphorically of course… we’re vegetarians).
