We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeanne Selander and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeanne, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I have a strong work ethic, instilled in me by my parents. It is important to be dedicated and passionate, to give something back, to make a difference, to be reliable, and true to your words. Never say never.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I currently supervise the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm, the only petting zoo and animal sanctuary located at a jail. I got where I am today through hard work, dedication, and a passion for animals in need. This job has never been easy, and I have overcome many hurdles and roadblocks. It is my labor of love. I have learned not to listen to the naysayers, to those who say it cannot be done. You can do anything you put your mind to.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Florida Keys are a unique treasure. I would take them to kayak the mangroves, visit endangered Key Deer, dive/snorkel the coral reefs at Looe Key, visit the Key West Butterfly Conservatory, the Marathon Turtle Hospital, and the Dolphin Research Center. We would also walk along the side streets of old town Key West, taking time to appreciate the historic homes and architecture.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This program would not be where it is today without the love and support of Dr. Douglas Mader, Deputy Becky Herrin, and Sheriff Rick Roth.
