We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Alencar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always had the desire to own a business. When I decided to finally take the first step and start my business journey, I sat down to brainstorm about my passions and jewelry was one of the first things that came to my mind. I used to constantly misplace my jewelry and when I tried to buy new ones, they were either super expensive or of poor quality. I remember I used to ask my mom to bring me jewelry from Brazil, where I am originally from, because of the price and the great quality. That’s when it hit me, why instead of asking my mom (and wait months for her to come) don’t I just open my own jewelry store with high quality pieces and accessible prices. I know other people have the same difficulty to find jewelry they love without breaking the bank, so Halo was created to fulfill this need.
What should our readers know about your business?
Halo was born in 2021 when I had just left a corporate job and was pursuing my dream to open my own business. Halo’s main goal is to help women feel empowered and beautiful with the power of jewelry. We showcase curated collections by select fine jewelry designers around the world. We are dedicated to featuring jewelry that is timeless, sophisticated, and affordable for all. What set us apart is that we also aim to inspire and help others along the way by having a strong presence in our community. Even though we are a new company, and our profit margins are still relatively small, we still want to do our part and donate to causes that we believe in.
To get to where we are today, I had great support from friends during campaigns, as well as a great marketing team from Trendy Experience. They helped me create a concept and build a unique image for me brand. It was not easy to start, especially since we launched post pandemic and I had to establish a name in a market where there are a lot of competitors. Some of the lessons I learned is that there is no such a thing as perfect time. No matter how much you know, or how much you think you know, there’s always more information to learn.
Especially in the fast-paced business environment that we live in today, waiting to do something or to move forward with a new project or to initiate something just because it is not quite perfect is a call for failure.
I am proud of what we have accomplished so far, especially when it comes to giving back and contributing to our community. Last year, we initiated a campaign during Women’s Entrepreneurship Day where we had the chance to donate part of our profit to a nonprofit organization responsible for educating at risk girls, and helping break the cycle of violence, poverty and abuse. In 2022, we initiated another campaign in partnership with Seissa Belmond hair salon where we offered free nipple-areola reconstruction to women who had experience breast cancer. The purpose was to empower breast cancer survivors and restore their confidence. And this is only the beginning, our goal is to continue to grow and support our community along the way through our jewelry pieces and whatever other way we can.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is always so much to do in Miami. During the day I’d probably take them to Wynwood, since they have great wall arts and amazing food, it is full of culture and different designs. After that, take a walk at the Brickell Center and head up to the Sugar rooftop bar.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I want to thank God. He has given me strength and encouragement throughout all the challenging moments of my career. I also want to make a shoutout to my parents for always supporting me and believing in my dreams. To my marketing assistant Karlla for helping me expand my business. And to my friends Verena, Ana and Victoria for being my models and strong supporters for all Halo’s campaigns.
