We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessie Wilkie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessie, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
At the start of 2020, I was at an all-time high. I had just accomplished my first year at a new company and was humbled by also being awarded Leader of the Year. Needless to say, I was “on my way to success,” and then…COVID happened. Overnight, my entire world changed. I was laid off from my job and had a front row seat to watching an industry that had given me SO MUCH crumble before my eyes. I was quickly fixated on the fact that the world of Hospitality, and those who worked in its world, did not have many options when it came to “relief programs.” Why? Because who would have ever DREAMED of a world where people would be scared to travel and terrified to dine outside of their homes. But, here we were, in a time such as this, and nowhere to turn. Although many remained hopeful, something in my gut told me that this “temporary” closure of hotels, restaurants, airlines, cruise lines–you name it–would be anything but short-lived. And all I could think was, “I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.” So, coming from the world of Human Resources, I decided to offer personalized resume assistance to give people hope of a new opportunity–even if they needed to pivot into a new career path. However, although my experience in Human Resources has been helpful, I believe the ultimate success of my brand has been my ability to empathize with my clients. I understand what it feels like to be hopeless in the job searching game. The majority of my clients come to me as a “last resort.” They’ve tried everything, but they’re not getting called back. They’re not landing interviews. They don’t know what to do now that no one is hiring. And they JUST NEED A JOB. However, they don’t want a cookie-cutter resume. They want Hiring Managers to see THEM when they read their resume. They want to feel valued. At YOR Careers, that is exactly what we promise. Through our one-hour coaching calls, we get to know our clients so we can sell THEM and not just another applicant. We work together with our clients to rebuild their confidence, strengthen their abilities to sell their best selves, increase their visibility to Hiring Managers, and help them regain ownership of their own reality as a professional through well-written resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles. We believe it’s not your experience. It’s how you’re selling it–and selling it well opens up doors! We give our clients options so that every time they submit an application, build connections on LinkedIn, and walk into an interview, they can walk in with confidence, walk out with a job (that they want), and WALK AWAY from the ones they don’t. Careers are what we do. Freedom is what we build. Our ultimate goal is to empower corporate professionals to be their own boss through personalized resume creation and life changing career coaching because this is YOR Career–Your Own Reality–and nobody else’s.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey in Hospitality started like many others, as a part-time server in a local restaurant. I grew to love the energy and people that came with the industry, which led me to pursue my Master’s Degree in Hospitality Management. As I continued gaining my experience, I quickly learned that I cared much more about my associates and their well-being than I did about servicing the guest, and so I entered the world of Human Resources. I started as a coordinator, where I encountered multiple growth challenges and opportunities that made me question whether or not I was fit for this role. However, I truly did love the world of Human Resources and the chance it provided to make a difference in employees’ work environment and satisfaction. Thankfully, in the midst of my contemplation, I was gifted with an amazing Director of Human Resources who saw my potential and believed that my “talents” were not being utilized properly. He created a role for me called Engagement and Communications Specialist, in which I thrived. My efforts were focused towards creating a work environment that people enjoyed coming to and building meaningful connections with associates in order to build trust and loyalty. From there, I was promoted to Engagement and Communications Manager, and later moved to another property to assume the role of Training and Engagement Manager, where I finished my first year as Leader of the Year. To see myself grow exponentially throughout my career has been unbelievable; however, I HAVE to contribute that to the Director who gave me a shot. I had lost my confidence to excel in an industry that I loved, and he gave that back to me. I do not believe that we show up in this world lacking confidence. I believe that there are people and experiences that slowly chip away at what we once believed to be “assets” in regards to what we bring to the table. We just need someone to remind us of that. And through YOR Careers, I want to be that “someone” for others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a hard one because the majority of what I enjoy is in the comfort of my home around my friends and family. So places to visit would probably look something like this: A cruise to Whiskey Creek in Fort Lauderdale on boat or paddle boards. Lunch at YOT. Beers at Riverside Market, LauderAle, or Tarpon River Brewing. Wine at Lagniappe. Italian Food at Sapido or Piazza. Mexican Food and Margaritas at Lona’s. Brunch at BSquare. Burgers at BRGR STOP. Lounge at the Wilder or Sparrow. Hangout at Sistrunk. Waterpark at Tidal Cove. Steak at Bourbon Steak or Smith & Wollensky.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jennie Wilkie, my sister, for assisting in designing the look and feel of my brand. Jose Alegre, my fiance, for always supporting my crazy dreams and goals. My parents for being the best brand ambassadors. And my clients for confidently referring me to their friends and family.
