We had the good fortune of connecting with Joanie-Ann Daniels and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joanie-Ann, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is the willingness to listen to my customers. Since the beginning of the business, which I originally started with a partner, we have made it a priority to provide products that people want and need. The success of my brand is 100% the result of my valuable customers. They have appreciated being listened to and, in turn, being provided with high quality products. They appreciate integrity and have been very loyal supporters!
What should our readers know about your business?
I actually have two businesses. They are both focused on making fermented food products that contain probiotics and support gut health. I make a wide variety of yogurt flavors, milk kefir, and sour cream from raw milk (sold for animal consumption only in Florida) under the brand Devour Me Creamery. Under Savor Traditional Foods, I make vegan coconut yogurt and kefir, coconut water kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, fermented onions, cauliflower, green beans, carrots, and other non-dairy fermented foods.
What sets me apart from others is that I care about every step of the process for my products. When I first started fermenting, I had some undesirable results. I also found it difficult to find ferments I actually enjoyed in stores. I knew that I was not going to force myself to eat something I didn’t like, so I learned traditional methods that resulted in probiotic foods that taste great. Now I actually crave these ferments, and I’m happy to provide these awesome foods to others living in South Florida!
It was not an easy journey. There have been challenges with scaling and growing a business as a single mom. I have dealt with challenges as they came and done my best to continue providing high quality products that people look forward to. Overall, I have learned that if there’s a will, there’s a way. Sometimes you might need to ask for help, but the world is still filled with wonderful people who love to help out where they can. Keep a positive attitude and people will want to be in your corner.
What I want people to know most about my story is that I started making these products to heal my son. He had painful digestive issues as a toddler and changing his diet to a more traditional diet helped him get better and start thriving! I appreciate every customer, and love hearing how my products have impacted their lives.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that I am grateful to for making this business possible. Andrea was my business partner, and she encouraged me to begin this business. Sheila, the founder of Southwest Ranches Farmers Market, asked Andrea repetitively to find her someone who could make great yogurt. She was patient while we figured out a process to produce enough for her customers. There are also several family-owned and operated stores and buying clubs throughout South Florida that have played a pivotal role in the success my brand has experienced. The owner of Tropical Treats & Eats has also provided me with lots of encouragement and business advice. My family has been very supportive and helpful, even making deliveries for me when I could not. And of course, I am very thankful to God for orchestrating all of this.
