We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Smart and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I was young I never thought of YGSC as a business. I found out I could put my own designs on T-shirts from a store in the colosseum mall on Jamaica ave not far from my neighborhood. So then I realized the same money I would use to buy the brand name clothes was kinda similar to what they would charge me to print my designs on shirts or air brush them. I would wear them to school my friends would like them,so would my cousins. So I guess it all started there. Since I would make these shirts for my little cousins my older cousins and friends I felt like we needed a name that would represent everybody. YGS (Young Grown Sexy) young for the kids. Grown for the men & teens. Sexy for all females. Next my main focus was getting a logo made that everyone would always remember and stand out. Playing around with the computer one day, I created the logo. The logo was created in 2004. I would just print up t shirts at home with my computer. I would use the iron to heat transfer then to the shirt, some I would go back to the colosseum to get made. I would give some of the T-shirts away to my cousins, & friends hoping other people would see the logo and maybe was Interested. Everything wasn’t smooth sailing tho. I that same year I had my first son born. I had to start thinking more about him & his well being. I put the clothing designing to the side. Fast forward a few years later I started to get back into it. I started making a few shirts for my self & my son. I really started to really enjoy making and designing shirts. Yet again few years later had daughter in 2011, same thing had to switch focus to my priorities. Everytime I would feel like it’s my time to get going life happens. I would always be designing little things on my phone never could get the clothing out my mind. In 2015 I said ima finally start taking things more serious I realized me printing t shirts in the colosseum I was spending a lot of money and if I wanted to print a lot of shirts I would have to get my own equipment. So I saved up bout a single head screen printing press, bought the heat machine to cure the shirts. At this point I was much older now money was gonna be a factor so with the shirts I was gonna make I was definitely not tryna give them away but try to sell them to get more equipment. Things was ok but slow money wasn’t getting produced as fast to maintain my life so I had to get a job. Feeling like this is never gonna happen a few years later a good friend of mine asked if I was still making shirts and if I needed a place to do it. I had to consider long and hard is this the opportunity I been waiting for. I would have to work extra hard, but so I did we got an even bigger four head four base screen printer we was buying the shirts wholesale. We was making money but we couldn’t supply as quick and as much as we wanted to do so we had to seek a manufacturer. I realized this is for real I have to start getting all my legal documents together I trademark the brand name and logo. In 2018 I made sure this was all done and ready. Everything going good then two years later, I had twin boys. Now again I had to focus on life and my priorities, but at this point in my life I realized my kids my family my brand was all a priority to me. So all I did was push threw stayed dedicated stayed consistent and stayed determined. The brand got even bigger and stronger and with the faith of god here we are today. YGSC

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work life started out working for myself grabbing side jobs with my uncles, until going to high school. I figured I needed some more money. I started going out in the regular work world got a job at Redlobsters. I would still be designing that was like a hobby of mine growing up before I really got serious into it. I started working Redlobsters busing tables until I got my license and started driving cab. Since I was 18 years old I would have other jobs. I worked For Sears & Roebuck, I worked for Domino’s pizza, i worked for TopDot mortgage bank, & I also worked shea stadium for two seasons. While I was doing these jobs I would still be driving cab. Driving was my main source of income that’s how I actually got the money to put towards my business, towards my brand, & to put it towards saving. I would be working multiple jobs saving money just trying to make it to the next level. It was a lot of challenges over the years just trying to get my business started. I kept having kids, different things would happen just life things in general would happen, pullbacks would happen, I would just have to keep fighting through keep fighting through stayed dedicated to what I was doing try to stay determined to what I was doing try to stay consistent. All those things really helped in me achieving my goals and starting my business, starting a family, and just living life in general. I feel like I got to where I’m at in life and business by really being dedicated, determined, and staying consistent with all aspects of my life. Life lessons I learned along the way. Take a trip to brooklyn go throw some hatchets and drink a few beers (Bury the hatchet Brooklyn axe). Next stop queens to go get some of NYC best pizza at margarita’s on Jamaica ave. Mmmm the best. Night life we go catch a game. Knicks or Nets. Just hang out have a great time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course, I wanna start by shouting out Kemani Tulloch (brother) Allen Elder (brother) David Lee (friend), my kids, my immediate family, & of course the lord him self because without him none of this would be possible. These people really was there for me when I had nothing, when I was just in the building stages. They had great faith and trust in my process and belief in us becoming a real clothing brand not just a custom design shop.
