We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Whitlatch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am born and raised just outside of Indianapolis, IN in a town called Lebanon. This school has a very long a rich tradition in the game of basketball, home of some of the oldest High School State Championships in the country. The knowledge I gained throughout my youth not only in basketball, but sports in general, has had a tremendous impact on where I am at today. I have been able to have and leave a bigger thumbprint in sports far bigger than I ever did as a player.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I had originally moved to South Florida, I was only doing training part time. About a month before my wedding, I actually lost my job at the time. So, regardless if I was ready or not, I had to adapt and direct all my focus towards training and coaching. And I can honestly, say I’ve never felt like I’ve worked a day since. From the flexibility to being able to see my little girl grow up daily, its been a blessing in disguise 100%. It was not easy. I think if you just take that first step. That first action, no matter what the case may be, you will surprise yourself. And Id be lying if I said I didn’t surprise myself even a little.
I’m not hear to claim I’m the best or most knowledgeable person in my field, because I’m not. Not even close. I’ve learned in life it’s the little things that have the greatest impact on not only random and coincidental situations, but your life as a whole. If I can be that 6 a.m. wake up call, a coach that doesn’t let you slack off, that text that reminds you that YOU CAN DO THIS, I will be that person. I want to be the little thing that has an enormous impact on your life and I am very proud of that.
It’s ok to be wrong. So many times, I’ve backed away from a lending hand or even an honest opinion simply because I couldn’t swallow my pride. Be a sponge, soak in others knowledge and learn all the lessons you can.
I want the world to remember my story. Maybe I never train you, work with you, even hold a conversation with you, but I want you to remember reading this. Today can be the day. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Today. Health is wealth. Start investing.
JUST WORK ATHLETICS
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The diversity in South Florida is like no other. Coming from the Mid West, I’ve been introduced to so many new foods and cultures that have been absolutely incredible. I think I would start from Miami and work my way up. I’m definitely a sports guy, so either a Heat or Dolphins game would need to be in the game plan.
Next, I would take a little day trip to Wynwood in Northern Miami area. It has such a great vibe. Unique and trendy shops, restaurants, and nearly everything is sort of the locally owned. The art and just scenery in general walking around is awesome.
Fort Lauderdale would be next where I am a big brunch type of guy and Las Olas Blvd is just the spot. Smack dab in the middle of downtown with everything to offer. Shopping. Dining. Luxury Living. It has it all. Beautiful area. Louie Bossi has a great outdoor and indoor option that is very nicely done.
I currently live in the Coral Springs/Coconut Creek area, just a little Northwest of Fort Lauderdale. One of our favorite spots with some of our friends is The Promenade at Coconut Creek. Whether a movie night, taco night, or trivia night, this is the spot. Everything is close and walkable throughout the plaza and always a great time.
Lastly, I think we will be hitting Atlantic Ave. just a little north of us in Delray Beach. I love that everything is on the main strip of Atlantic Ave and walkable. I’m 34 years old, and I’ve found even the age group is sort of the older Millennial generation like myself. Some house made guac at Rocco’s Taco’s and a margarita (or four) later, and we are good to go!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This is for all those athletes out there that feel they have a little gas left in the tank. Your career on the court or playing field doesn’t have to end as soon as you might think. Use your knowledge and experiences from the lessons you’ve learned as athletes and it will open doors you wouldn’t imagine. The impact you can have on individuals across the world is far greater than any stat in the record books.
