We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Strempack and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I grew up in Taipei, Taiwan till I graduated from Taiwan University with a Chinese literature degree. I moved to US to acquire a master degree in language education and linguistics. Since I was a child, I always had passion in music, art, dance and writing. Throughout my childhood and young adult age, I was a trained dancer, a painter, a graphic designer, a singer, a calligraphic artist, a piano player, a linguist and other artistic interests. I am entering a phase in my life at this moment with the opportunities of playing music for an audience. I just started the career of a professional DJ concentrating on electronic music and also music across genres and decades.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My earliest professional artistic career was singing. I was recording an album with a producer until he died tragically in a car accident. Later on, I was making contemporary paintings with abstract concepts and mixed with Chinese calligraphy. I had a few successful art shows. I also started a advertising business with my husband and oversaw marketing and graphic design department. Then I became a language teacher as a career teaching Mandarin to high school and Middle School students. Right now, I have started to play music three nights a week at a beach venue (McSorley’s). I am exploring the world of EDM and house music. I am hoping to work on my craft and get in the recording studio to make my own mixes.

I have always worked hard and gave my 100% no matter what I did in life. The most challenging part to do any creative work successfully is to feel inspired. During the pandemic, there were many obstacles which brought me and my family down. I overcame depression and tried to move on with a strong will. Being resilient is the life lesson that I learned in this journey.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely start the visit with my DJ job at McSorley’s. They will have so much fun relaxing by the beach, eating and drinking and listening to my music. The weekend will also include a trip to Wynwood district in Miami to explore the arts and nightlife. It will be great to have a late lunch and shop on Lincoln Road, then take a long walk to Ocean Drive for some sightseeing. In the end of the weekend, I will drive my friends around my town, Fort Lauderdale. There are so many great spots along A1A and Las Olas too. (I felt like I actually did this routines many times in the past with my visitors!)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The story of my life has been a roller coaster ride. Throughout all the ups and downs, I always have my husband’s love and support who is also an amazing singer and a songwriter. I get inspired by my cool and beautiful daughter to look at this world with a positive perspective. I always told her to chase her dreams and don’t give up, and now I am chasing mine.
