We had the good fortune of connecting with Jullian Farrington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jullian, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Jullian’s Gateway: Opening Doors to Success is a youth-led nonprofit I started that is dedicated to supporting underrepresented students by removing barriers to opportunity and access. The organization focuses on providing academic resources, mentorship, leadership development, and exposure to new and innovative opportunities. Many of these resources, including scholarships and enrichment programs, are not traditionally introduced to students from marginalized communities. By intentionally addressing these gaps, Jullian’s Gateway works to create more equitable pathways to success at no cost to the students. The organization is rooted in the belief that access and guidance can change a student’s entire trajectory.

By centering students from marginalized communities, Jullian’s Gateway helps young people build confidence and set meaningful long-term goals. The organization also supports students in navigating complex educational systems that often overlook or underserve them. Through consistent mentorship and community-based support, students gain the tools they need to advocate for themselves and their communities. This work not only uplifts individual students but also strengthens families and communities as a whole. By investing in young people, Jullian’s Gateway helps cultivate the next generation of leaders and change-makers.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Jullian’s Gateway is unique because it doesn’t just share information, it connects students to opportunities that will continue to prepare them to succeed in their academic and personal pursuits. We focus on real-world mentorship, leadership development, and guided exposure to scholarships, enrichment programs, internships, and collaborations that make success achievable, not just imaginable. One of the partnerships I’m most proud of is with See The World Foundation, a youth-led nonprofit based in New Jersey focused on supporting children’s vision and overall wellbeing. Together, we are exploring ways to integrate confidence-building and resources to create more holistic support for students. We are also building relationships with local organizations and foundations that share our mission, and are in conversations with potential partners to expand access to leadership workshops and funding opportunities. What sets Jullian’s Gateway apart is this intentional network-building, we don’t operate alone, we connect and collaborate, because equity happens through community.

Getting to where Jullian’s Gateway is today hasn’t been easy. Limited funding, learning how to structure effective programs, working with different organizations, and balancing outreach with student needs were all challenges that forced us to adapt and grow. Through creative problem-solving and listening closely to the students we serve, we refined our approach and strengthened our impact. Jullian’s Gateway has learned that flexibility and a focus on actionable results are essential to meaningful work. What the world should know about the organization is that it is rooted in the belief that access changes trajectories, and by equipping young people with the tools and connections they need, supported by the guidance of experienced youth leaders, we are cultivating the next generation of leaders. The work ahead excites me, expanding our partnerships and continuing to prove that when students are truly supported and guided, there’s no limit to what they can achieve in our society.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting Miami for a week, I’d make sure they got the full experience of the city’s energy and vibe. We’d spend time at Miami Beach, relaxing, making TikTok videos and Instagram reels, swimming, and enjoying Miami’s sun. For meals, we’d explore the city’s amazing local food trucks, which have some of the best and most unique food you can find anywhere. A highlight of the trip would definitely be Wynwood, where we could explore the incredible street art, murals, stores, and any local events that would be happening. We’d also take a boat tour of Biscayne Bay, visit neighborhoods like Coral Gables and Coconut Grove to discover some of the hidden gems, and maybe even go jetskiing. At night, we’d hang out at local spots to enjoy the city’s nightlife and maybe even go see a movie. By the end of the week, they’d get a mix of adventure, culture, art, and amazing food, along with a real feel for the vibrant people and spirit that make Miami so unique.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my community as a whole, including my school’s teachers and administrators, community leaders, family members, and the people I’ve met throughout my life. Each of these groups have supported me in different ways and at different moments of my life without realizing how much their actions actually mattered, and I believe this is a perfect moment to give them some credit. At Miami Norland Senior High School, I have been fortunate to have adults who consistently made time for me, listened to my ideas, and encouraged me to take on opportunities that has pushed me to grow. Their support has helped me develop not only academically, but also as a leader and a young advocate. Having people around me who believed in my potential and my ideas has made it easier for me to believe in myself, even during challenging or overwhelming times.

Several adults at my school have had a particularly meaningful impact on my journey. Mrs. Rhonda Gaines-Miller, the principal at Miami Norland Senior High, has always taken the time to listen to my ideas and has helped me access opportunities and experiences that I wouldn’t have been able to pursue on my own. I have spent hours in her office discussing leadership initiatives and even my plans for the future, and each of those conversations has left me feeling supported. Similarly, Mrs. Karen Delgado, Miami Norland’s vice principal, has been a steady presence throughout my high school life, offering encouragement when I felt overwhelmed. She helped me not only start my organization, but also empowers me to continue running it, providing her full attention when I needed to talk, even if she was super busy. She has supported me in so many ways, from helping me navigate my academic coursework to guiding me toward future opportunities by writing recommendation letters for college and scholarships. She always makes time to check in and ask how my day is going, and our relationship has grown to be mutual, I make sure to check in with her as well. Over time, this has allowed us to build a genuine bond. With Mrs. Gaines-Miller, they’ve helped me see that administrators can be both supportive and approachable in ways that go beyond what people usually expect or assume. Their guidance has been both practical and personal, and it has shaped how I view leadership and mentorship.

Dr. Angel Robinson, an assistant principal at Miami Norland, Ms. Carla Harris, my school’s Dean of Discipline, and Ms. Crystal Stanley, my school’s Community Liaison Specialist, have also consistently made time for me, letting me ramble when my mind is overfull and reminding me to focus one day at a time. Mrs. Mykita Cherry-Prime, my 11th-grade teacher and mentor, has taught me the true meaning of leadership through her example and guidance, giving me opportunities to share my knowledge with others and step into leadership roles I might not have pursued otherwise. Each of these adults has helped me in different ways, through listening, guidance, opportunities, and patience, and all of them have contributed equally to the person I am becoming.

Outside of school, my community and family have been equally important in shaping who I am today. The Miami Gardens City Council has offered me resources to practice leadership, take on responsibilities, opportunities to grow my nonprofit and advance my professional career, and the networks I need to build connections that are rare for most teenagers. Serving as District 1 Youth Commissioner under Commissioner Oliver Gilbert since October 2023 has given me firsthand experience in public service. It has allowed me to connect with other young leaders, and offered me insight into a career path I hope to follow in law and politics. My family has always been a foundation for me, celebrating my successes and encouraging me to push through all challenges no matter how big they seemed. Finally, I am grateful for the people I’ve met unexpectedly throughout my life, from politicians, creators, artists, to other leaders who have shared honest advice and personal stories. Seeing how they began their careers, faced obstacles, and continued to persevere has been an invaluable learning experience that goes beyond any classroom or podcast. Each of these people and experiences has played a role in helping me grow, and I am thankful for the guidance and encouragement they’ve provided along the way.

But most importantly, I want to recognize the leadership behind Jullian’s Gateway, because this mission is not carried by one person alone, it is powered by a team. Our Executive Board, consisting of Wester Mordan, Jullian’s Gateway Vice President, Syeda Ferdausi, our Secretary, Jaiel Langston, our Peer Mentor and Wellness Advocate Coordinator, Cherish Nichols, our Creative Media and Social Media Strategy Manager, and Na’riyah McKinney, our Board Delegate for Student Voices, guides the vision of Jullian’s Gateway with integrity and purpose, making sure to set the standard for excellence and accountability, making sure that every decision and initiative reflects our mission and inspires the rest of the team to give their best. Supporting the Executive Board is our Leadership Team which consist of, Akeelah Brown, our Fundraising and Development Lead, Kennise Allen, our Student Representative Chair, Maya Beaufort, our Student Engagement Chair, Abigail Gomez, our Volunteer and Service Chair, Alanah Charles, our Student Impact Chair, and David Thomas, our Photography Chair. Together, we are building something greater than ourselves, and I am deeply grateful to lead and serve alongside individuals who believe so strongly in opening doors for others.
