We had the good fortune of connecting with Keleisha Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keleisha, what do you attribute your success to?
Having the knowledge of doing something and actually accomplishing it is usually what stops some persons from achieving their goals. Developing a business plan was far from my mind, doubt prevailed and I made myself believe I was not capable of creating and growing my own business. Looking on my formative years, and not seeing anyone who was successful in this type of venture allowed me to think I would never find the help or support needed. However, I am a strong believer in having multiple sources of income, different from your main stream. With that being said I started a “hustle” – events planning and management in Jamaica. Soon after I relocated to the United States and started offering resume designs, rapidly building a clientele of persons all over the world. You would now think, I saw this as a full-on business, no – still as a side hustle.
So, what led me to where I am today you might be asking, well my previous employer offered me an opportunity of managing all their social media platforms. This was the turning point in my entrepreneurial journey – I started reading and researching to fully equip myself with the knowledge I needed to create my own business. I remember reading a book by Michael Gerber, The E- Myth Revisited, that gave me the step-by-step guide in starting and growing a business.
I quickly applied what I was learning, built my confidence and developed a business plan for Carter’s Creative Solutions. Things started falling into place very quickly after, new business came in and I was finding my balance. I am happy that I have been able to prove to myself daily that I am able to develop and grow a successful business.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Any entrepreneur’s greatest fear and risk is opening up for help and granting employment. I am very proud that today I have a team of over 7 persons working assiduously to maintain the company’s brand and mission in offering creative design services such as graphic design (logos, business cards, lables etc.), social media management and website design solutions. I am also able to create second streams of income for persons my own age; this is what I am most proud of.
How did you get to where you are today?
I pride myself in being a very dedicated and hardworking individual. My drive and work ethic exceed me and I strongly believe that is why I was asked to still serve my previous employment, even after leaving the country. In addition to finding people who possessed the same qualities and the ability to provide the best experience for our customers gave me the extra push I needed to show me that people believe in me and my brand.
Was it easy? How did you overcome the challenges?
It was not easy and it was not hard, manageable would be a better word to describe the experience so far. There have been days when I was exhausted after working a 12-hour shift from my mainstream job, thengoing home to work on my business. I had to develop a balance and maximize on the slow seasons at work and put effort into building my business structure to how I envisioned it to be.
Give us a lesson(s) you have learned so far.
Outsourcing help can be more beneficial to you than harmful. I was afraid of expanding and too timid to ask for help – however, the minute I opened up the door for that to happen, more exponential growth happened. Also, do not undervalue yourself. Know your worth and place in the market and allow people to buy into that. Never shortchange yourself.
What do you want the world to know?
We bridge this gap so the creative can create and we enhance the customer experience by managing tasks and delivering reliable, affordable, and scalable creative content to any business. Our goal is to help strengthen brands’ online presence with the help of our website, social media management and graphic design services.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
