We had the good fortune of connecting with Liliana Barrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Liliana, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose a creative artistic career because dancing and movement are meaningful to me; they give me a reason to wake up every day happy and content to do whatever it takes to keep going on and continue growing. I studied marketing, advertising, and business management before starting my artistic career, and even though I was very good at it, I felt like something was missing. I also want to share my passion with the world because dancing and intelligent exercising have many benefits at all levels: physical, mental, and emotional. Changing my career changed my life, and even though I probably make much less money, I am happier and enjoy what I do.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a professional dancer and a certified Pilates instructor with more than 18 years of experience in performing and teaching. I have explored the physical, expressive, and artistic connection between various forms of dance: belly dance, tango, aerial, salsa, bachata, and zouk, as well as the discipline of Pilates, to better understand physical movement and its connection to communicate and express emotions. I have studied a wide variety of rhythms and techniques that I incorporate into my repertoires and classes throughout my artistic career. I emphasize the importance of breathing, good posture, strength, and flexibility into the movement to connect the physical, emotional, and mental, with a high sense of awareness. I have put all this knowledge and experience into StepFlix, my business, that is more than my project. It’s my baby; my dream come true. The most exciting about StepFlix is that we get to help people in many ways: to make their happy moments unique and special, to release stress, to maintain physical and emotional well-being, to learn how to dance and exercise in their safe environment and without the pressure of feeling embarrassed or exposed. It has not been easy, as starting a business and pursuing your dreams take time and lots of energy, money, effort, and hard work. I have had to overcome dealing with technology, as well as stepping out of my comfort zone. I have to learn many things and acquire other skills, such as editing videos, writing a blog, and so on, to keep going on. I have also learned how to delegate and trust other people’s abilities to help me. I want the world to know that StepFlix is the online dance & fitness studio and the source of complete entertainment. That at StepFlix, we make your events one to remember; that you will learn how to dance with a progression in an easy to follow way and that you will learn how to exercise effectively.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Many people have helped and supported me on this journey, starting with my family; when they saw that I was serious about pursuing a professional pilates and dancing career, they decided to support me financially to start. Without their help, it would have been impossible to be where I am today. They also support me emotionally as they are always there for me, to lift me when things get tough and encourage me to continue. All StepFlix instructors and performers are also a key on my journey, especially the ones who started with me from the beginning; they believed in my dreams, and most importantly, they believed in me, as capable of making it happen. I want to say thank you to all and each one of them for all their commitment, hard work, effort, and energy they have put into each class, show, performance, and moment we have walked along. The people who work behind the scenes with me (and those who have worked with me in the past): my assistants, StepFlix videographers, photographers, attorneys and accountant have also played an essential role in this process. They help me make my ideas into reality, contribute their own, and always look for the best way to do things. All finally my dear friends who daily encourage, support, and even challenge me, are also part of this process. StepFlix is a result of teamwork.
