We had the good fortune of connecting with Luisa Mesa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luisa, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
The pursuit of my artistic career unfolded in stages. While making a living in the business world I began to study photography and that was the onset of a huge change in my life. From there I began to take private painting classes and after a while made the decision to go back to school and earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I really never looked back after that. My first studio as a professional artist was at The Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood and subsequently at Art Center South Florida, now Oolite Arts.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The common thread that runs through most of my work is repetitive drawing and layering. Although I employ different mediums such as ink, enamel, watercolor, graphite and digital images, among others, drawing and layering are always present in my work. I believe that said repetitive drawing is what sets my work apart from others. What I am most proud of is that my work has been collected in Dubai, Lebanon, New York and Miami Beach, among other places. What excites me the most is that I am always seeking new forms of artistic expression; I am passionate about my creative process. Where I am today professionally unfolded organically. I am driven and self-disciplined most of the time, thus not losing sight of the goal, even when I get sidetracked. Even though there have been difficult moments along the way, I really love what I do; it calms me, centers me and adds a dimension to my life that makes it totally worthwhile! Along the way I have learned many things, primarily about myself. My process has been and is, one of self-discovery. Without a question, it is my path in life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Four years ago I moved from Miami city to Redland, an agricultural community in South Miami Dade County. Redland is very close to the Florida Keys, where we visit often. I love the laid-back atmosphere of dining in Key Largo in places such as Lazy Lobster and Conch House Key Largo. I don’t really frequent trendy places and prefer a casual atmosphere. If I had to entertain a friend visiting Miami, I would probably take them to one of the above-mentioned restaurants for sure! Maybe we would rent a boat for a day or go to the beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am grateful to my family and friends for their encouragement and unwavering support. The many galleries past and present who have believed in my work and the collectors who thought my work was good enough to acquire it.
