We had the good fortune of connecting with Maiah De La Rosa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maiah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My grandfather was the spark that ignited my leap of faith. He passed when I was young, but his words still echo in my mind: ‘Work for yourself.’ I’ve lived many lives and gathered a kaleidoscope of experiences. Through it all, I discovered that my gift is creating something out of nothing. I’ve been fortunate to accumulate the skills to make that happen.

Before COVID, I launched a nonprofit — but just as our first fundraiser was set to begin, the state shut down, and so did that chapter. Fast forward to about six months ago, and my world shifted again. This time, though, I was the one holding the match. I had a choice: keep working for others, often at my own expense, or bet on myself.

I chose me. Starting my own business wasn’t just a career move; it was a declaration of self-love. I realized I have everything I need to succeed — and I’m done waiting for permission to do so.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey has been anything but linear — and that’s what makes it powerful. I’ve worked across public health, social work, advocacy, and community leadership, building a unique skill set that allows me to see both the big picture and the finer details. What sets me apart is my ability to turn challenges into opportunities and ideas into action.

With four degrees — a BS in Political Science, a BS in Social Work, and a dual master’s in Social Work and Public Health — I’ve dedicated my career to driving meaningful change. One of my proudest moments was leading a mental health initiative at UCF during my senior year. The success of that initiative not only improved student well-being and academic success but also contributed to the university becoming a smoke-free campus.

I’ve also had the privilege of working on policy reforms that increased inclusivity and expanded community resources. As a Burning Man Regional Contact and Board Chair of Burnt Oranges, I’ve fostered community connections, led large-scale events, and championed creative expression. Burning Man has taught me the beauty of radical collaboration and the transformative power of shared experiences.

Beyond my leadership roles, I’ve embraced the world of performance art. As a fire performer and target girl, I’ve learned the value of trust, precision, and resilience. Standing center stage — quite literally — has deepened my understanding of courage, adaptability, and the importance of creating moments that inspire.

The path wasn’t easy. Balancing advocacy with operational leadership often meant navigating resistance and uncertainty. But every challenge strengthened my belief in the power of community and the importance of leading with authenticity. I’ve learned that success isn’t solely about personal achievement; it’s about creating lasting impact.

Lately, my journey has led me to explore the spiritual nature of the world, intertwining it with my knowledge of science and academia. The road was anything but smooth — I don’t wear my struggles on the outside, but in my mind, there was never another option. I fully believe my purpose is to help heal the world. Taking this leap of faith made me realize that every twist and turn in my path was necessary. Every experience, whether joyful or painful, has equipped me with the skills and lessons to guide others through their own challenges.

Through my work, I aim to uplift voices that often go unheard, build equitable systems, and create spaces where people feel valued and empowered. My brand and story are rooted in transformation — both personal and communal — and I’m committed to continuing that work every day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I naturally gravitate toward artistic community spaces, and one of my favorites is Little Bohemia in Little Haiti. It’s a vibrant hub filled with creatives and incredible humans. There’s something magical about watching people share their art — whatever form that may take. It’s the kind of place that sparks conversations and leaves you inspired.

Of course, no trip here would be complete without a visit to the beach. The ocean has a way of resetting your spirit, and it’s a quintessential part of the experience. Whether it’s lounging in the sun or catching a sunset, the beach is a must.

Lately, there’s been an exciting influx of creative spaces and clubs popping up, and I’m always discovering something new. From intimate music venues to underground art shows, I’d take my friend along for the ride, exploring the energy and passion that pulses through the city. It would be a week of inspiration, connection, and plenty of unforgettable moments.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate a shoutout to my mother, grandmother, grandfather, uncle, and my closest friend, Dion. It’s been my mother and me against the world for as long as I can remember. My grandparents and uncle passed when I was young, but their memory and lessons are woven into who I am. My mother is a force of nature — through her, I learned what it means to be a strong woman. She taught me to stand in my power, no matter the consequences, because the only thing I truly fear is losing myself.

I also want to acknowledge every person I’ve crossed paths with, regardless of how our story ended. Every encounter carries a lesson. I’m sorry if I was the lesson they failed, but I’m deeply grateful for the lessons I learned and passed along the way.
