We had the good fortune of connecting with Marguerite Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marguerite, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking, to me, is about evaluating the potential for growth against the fear of the unknown. I think of risk as a calculated decision—a blend of intuition, planning, and acceptance that things might not go as planned, which is such a big part of this business. Everything, down to the weather, involves an element of risk.
Taking risks has played a huge role in shaping my life and career, especially when I stepped out of my comfort zone to pursue photography more seriously. Shifting focus wasn’t easy, especially with a busy life as a mom, firefighter, and small business owner. But each time I took a leap—whether booking that first maternity shoot or investing in new equipment—it pushed me closer to my goals.
Risk-taking has also taught me resilience and self-belief. Not every risk has paid off as I’d hoped, but each setback offered invaluable lessons. Now, when I consider a risk, I ask myself if the potential reward aligns with my values and long-term vision. I remind myself that some of the best things in my life began with a bit of courage and faith in the unknown. I thank God, my unwavering values, and my foundation for helping me get to this point. With risk comes the possibility of failure, and my experience as a firefighter has strengthened my understanding of the risk/reward balance.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a lifestyle photographer—one among many talented others—it’s the unique qualities you bring that shape your art. My niche is capturing families and their milestones, whether that’s welcoming a new baby, celebrating a first birthday, or marking a high school or college graduation. Every moment is worth preserving, and I’m here to capture those timeless memories.
I believe my unique gift lies in making those in front of my lens feel comfortable in their own skin. I love capturing candid moments filled with effortless smiles and genuine laughter. I don’t mind being a goof on my end to help others laugh, smile, and feel at ease.
Getting to this point hasn’t been easy. As a mom of two young children (ages 2 and 4) and a full-time firefighter/paramedic, building a small business has required time, patience, and a lot of unseen work. I know I’ve reached where I am today thanks to the unwavering support of my family and friends and my persistence to keep going. Overcoming challenges has meant listening to my body, recognizing signs of burnout, and stepping back when I needed to recharge. Refocusing has reminded me why I started this journey in the first place.
My brand is something special. I’m a mom, a firefighter, and a creative. I understand the importance of those moments you want to freeze in time because life is precious, and there’s no pause button. Every moment I capture holds deep meaning to me, whether it’s the birth of a precious baby or a firefighter’s final shift. I am honored to have an inside look at some of the most cherished moments in people’s lives.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, this one is so fun! As a Florida native, my favorite thing is to showcase the beauty South Florida has to offer. On the first day, I’d plan a visit to my old stomping grounds in Pompano Beach. I’d take my best friend to some hidden gems along the beach, all within walking distance of the lighthouse. We’d stroll down to the newly renovated pier, have lunch at Lucky Fish, and wrap up our beach day at the charming old Briny Irish Pub.
The next day would be perfect for a boat outing. We’d launch at Cooley’s Landing in Fort Lauderdale, which gives us a gorgeous view of both old and new Florida. We’d cruise by the train bridge, the historic Stranahan House, and marvel at the towering new buildings that seem to pop up every day. We could relax at the sandbar or take a quick trip to Whiskey Creek, where we can either enjoy the brackish waters of the Intracoastal or walk over to the beach at Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park. Our day could end with dinner at one of the many waterfront restaurants. A few favorites are Shooters or Coconuts, and if we stop by 15th Street Fisheries, we could even feed the fish right off the dock.
By the third day, we’d probably need a bit of relaxation, so a spa and shopping day would be perfect. There are a few great spas nearby in Cooper City, and we could visit the local G-Maries Boutique for a shopping break, followed by lunch at the delicious Greek Joint Kitchen and Bar.
On the fourth day, I’d love to take my friend out west to the Everglades. We have an airboat, which lets us explore the true beauty of Florida’s wild side. From sea to sawgrass, we’d see birds, flowers, deer, and gators—and experience the profound silence of nature once we cut the engines.
Since I love fitness, I’d start most mornings with a partner workout at my gym, Legacy Fit, and follow it with yoga at YogaJoint.
I think my favorite thing to do with the people I love is simply spending time together. On days without plans, I’d love to sit out back at home, reconnect, and make memories by laughing, talking, and spilling the tea on life.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few people who hold leading roles in the journey of my photography career. First and foremost, I’d like to give a huge shoutout to Jimmy, my parents, and my close family. They’ve been an essential part of my support system from the very beginning. Jimmy has been there through all the highs and lows, cheering me on and encouraging me to keep going, even when things felt challenging. My parents have been a constant source of strength, instilling in me the values of hard work and resilience, which have been the foundation of everything I do.
My kids, Emory and Stetson, are my biggest motivators. They’re my daily reminder of why I want to build something meaningful, both for myself and for them. They keep me grounded and inspire me to chase my dreams while showing them the importance of hard work and following their passions—even when it’s hectic chasing my two high-energy little ones around!
My journey with WildPearl began when a friend asked me to shoot her maternity photos. That moment was the push I needed to take photography more seriously. Without her trust and encouragement, I might still be dreaming instead of doing. Her belief in my work showed me that I had something valuable to offer.
And, of course, the community around me has been incredible. Friends and family trusting me to capture their important milestones and spreading the word have been so vital to my growth. Each of their stories, encouragement, and referrals has been a building block for my business, and I’m truly grateful for every single person who’s been part of this journey.
